SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Assistant Coach/Volunteer Coach supports the Head Coach in providing a positive, safe, and educational athletic experience for student-athletes. This position assists with the instruction of game strategies, sport-specific skills, and team development while fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth. The Assistant Coach/Volunteer Coach helps establish positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and the school community, and performs duties as assigned by the Head Coach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education - GED or higher.
- High school varsity or collegiate experience as an athlete or coach preferred.
- Previous coaching or volunteer experience at the youth, middle school, or high school level is preferred but not required.
- A national, state, and local criminal records and sex-offender registry check must be completed and approved by Duneland School Corporation before an offer or volunteer appointment is made.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Assist the Head Coach with team organization, practices, and competitions.
- Help encourage student participation and assist with team meetings and preseason activities.
- Assist in evaluating student-athlete skills and implementing instruction to improve individual and team performance.
- Support the planning and execution of practice sessions as directed by the Head Coach.
- Assist with supervision of student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and team activities.
- Provide instruction to individuals and small groups regarding sport rules, techniques, conditioning, and teamwork.
- Observe athletes during practices and competitions and provide feedback to the Head Coach regarding player development.
- Assist with game preparation, warm-ups, and in-game responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach.
- Help maintain appropriate standards of student behavior and ensure proper supervision of athletes at all times.
- Support the Head Coach in promoting academic success and maintaining student eligibility requirements.
- Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete injury and immediately notify the Head Coach or appropriate personnel.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents, staff, officials, and spectators while referring concerns to the Head Coach when appropriate.
- Follow all National Federation, IHSAA, Duneland Athletic Conference, Duneland School Corporation, and Chesterton Middle School rules, policies, and procedures governing the athletic program.
- Model good sportsmanship, professionalism, and appropriate conduct at all times.
- Assist with the care, inventory, distribution, collection, and maintenance of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
- Assist with special events including parent meetings, Parent Night, banquets, awards programs, pep assemblies, camps, and other team activities.
- Help maintain team records, equipment inventories, emergency information, and other documentation as assigned.
- Remain on school premises until all student-athletes have been picked up or otherwise properly released. Coaches and volunteers shall not provide transportation to student-athletes except in emergency situations and in accordance with district policy.
- Participate in evaluations and professional development as requested by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or school administration.
- Model nondiscriminatory practices and promote an inclusive environment for all students.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or school administration.

- Basic proficiency with technology used for communication, record keeping, and team operations, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisors and district administrators.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Duties are normally performed in a school environment or outdoors. Duties may be performed away from school. There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.
Equipment: A basic knowledge of operations for computers and software, printers, projectors, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers is required.
Hours: There are regular after school, evening and weekend activities hours. In season, preseason and post season activities are required and expected.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
