About the Role

We're looking for an experienced Greenhouse General Manager/ Head Grower to lead all aspects of our greenhouse operations - from production and plant care to retail and team development. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for keeping our greenhouse thriving, our customers informed, and our team performing at their best.


About the Farm

Volante Farms in Needham, MA is a place for all seasons. As a fourth-generation family run farm, farm stand, and garden center Volante Farms has over one hundred years in the community. In 2012, the farm stand was remodeled adding two kitchens, a deli, bakery, and an ice cream stand/coffee bar. From 1917 to today, we continue to grow and give back to our community.


Key Responsibilities

Plan and manage day-to-day greenhouse operations, including watering, fertilizing, planting, and crop scheduling

Delegate tasks and supervise staff to ensure efficient, high-quality work

Maintain retail displays, work areas, and equipment in top condition

Monitor and manage environmental controls (temperature, vents, fans, heating/cooling)

Scout for and report/mitigate pest or disease issues promptly

Receive deliveries, manage vendor relationships, and negotiate credits

Order seeds, supplies, labels, and other materials on an ongoing basis

Keep detailed records of greenhouse production

Assist and train staff to serve customers proactively and professionally

Resolve customer and employee issues in a timely, professional manner in conjunction with management team, HR, and ownership

Support pricing, inventory, and merchandising of plants and supplies

Handle register transactions, opening/closing procedures, and cash handling as needed


Working Conditions

This is a physically active, full time, year round, outdoor/greenhouse role. Expect continuous standing, walking, reaching, and lifting. You'll work in varying temperatures and environmental conditions. As this is a retail environment, weekends and holidays are often required.ย 


Schedule

This is a full time, retail based job. The schedule is roughly 40 hours per week, which will often include weekends, evening, and holidays. We are closed many major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day, Fourth of July).ย 


ย The above stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for the position. ย Time and a half is paid for all hours over 40, Sundays, and selected holidays.ย 

Requirements

ย Qualifications

5+ years of greenhouse experience required

Strong knowledge of horticulture and plant care

Proven experience managing a team (this role oversees 10-20 direct reports)

Excellent customer service and communication skills

Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physical tasks continuously throughout the shift

Must be 18 years of age or older
