Job description

As a shop technician, you will maintain the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of the shop equipment and facilities. You will anticipate and enforce policies, procedures, and safety measures, and advise students on fabrication issues. Among other duties, you will ensure proper equipment use, maintain tool inventories through WebCheckout, and assist with class demonstrations and setup. Responsibilities include delivering exceptional customer service to students from all academic departments to ensure goals are met and completing daily assignments promptly. You will also help the shop manager to train and onboard new staff.
In this role, you will perform light maintenance and thorough cleanings of shop equipment and spaces throughout the quarter and during breaks. Daily, you will report to the shop manager to discuss safety or equipment concerns and assist with loading, unloading, and processing delivered materials and equipment. Responsibilities include the proactive identification and development of shop functionality improvements, attendance at all shop monitor meetings each quarter, and the delivery of required data to shop managers. Among other duties, you will maintain stock inventories, ensure the POS terminal is up to date, and promptly complete billing. You will also attend all university-sponsored safety and training sessions, demonstrating a commitment to workplace safety protocols and standards. Additionally, you will provide first aid for minor incidents and serve as backup during times of high demand.

Minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining industrial woodworking tools, such as table saws, bandsaws, drills, jointers, planers, and wood lathes
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed, including nights and weekends

Preferred qualifications:
  • Associate or bachelor's degree
  • Prior experience in a woodshop, metalworking, or fabrication environment
  • Experience in an academic setting
  • Knowledge of furniture making, model-making techniques, materials, and safety protocols for equipment
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with various Adobe software, Microsoft Office, and 3D modeling/graphics programs

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
