Job description

A large academic medical center in Greenville, North Carolina, is seeking a board-eligible or board-certified Forensic Pathologist. Applicants must be certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and be board certified or eligible in Forensic Pathology.

Candidates should possess knowledge of current principles, practices, techniques, and advances in forensic pathology and medicolegal death investigation.


The health system is expanding forensic services throughout its 32-county eastern North Carolina service area through the development of a new $35 million, 25,000-square-foot regional forensic pathology center. Groundbreaking is anticipated in 2026, with the facility expected to open in 2027.


The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides a broad range of anatomic and clinical pathology services for hospital and outpatient populations. The department supports an AP/CP residency program and a forensic pathology fellowship, offering opportunities to participate in medical education, research, and the continued development of regional pathology services.


Position Highlights:

  • Employment with a physician-led academic medical group
  • Hospital privileges at a 974-bed, Level I trauma center and academic medical center
  • Join an established program that currently includes two forensic pathologists and one pathologists’ assistant
  • Regional autopsy center completes approximately 600–650 medical examiner autopsies annually
  • Approximately 500–550 external examinations completed each year
  • Center also provides hospital autopsy services, completing approximately 80–100 medical autopsies annually
  • Opportunity to teach medical students, residents, fellows, and law enforcement personnel

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Review investigative reports to determine jurisdiction
  • Determine the necessity and extent of postmortem examinations
  • Direct assistants in preparing bodies for autopsy, including appropriate photographic documentation
  • Perform autopsies and obtain specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Conduct microscopic examinations when appropriate
  • Determine the cause and manner of death
  • Prepare and complete reports of findings in a timely manner
  • Review current medical and scientific literature as needed to support case determinations
  • Provide expert-witness testimony in court
  • Teach medical students, residents, fellows, and law enforcement personnel
  • Consult with prosecution and defense attorneys in preparation for court proceedings
