What is an assistant field engineer?

Assistant Field Engineers are entry-level professionals who support senior engineers in overseeing and managing engineering projects at construction or field sites. Their responsibilities typically include assisting with site surveys, collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, and ensuring that engineering activities comply with project specifications and safety standards. They also help troubleshoot on-site issues, coordinate with contractors and other team members, and maintain project documentation. This role provides hands-on experience and is often a stepping stone to more advanced engineering positions.

What are some typical challenges an assistant field engineer might face during on-site projects?

Assistant Field Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to changing site conditions, coordinating with multiple teams, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. They may also need to quickly troubleshoot technical issues and communicate updates effectively to project managers and senior engineers. Successfully managing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and clear communication with both field and office personnel.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant field engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Field Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, strong problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, surveying equipment, and industry-standard project management tools is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and responding to on-site challenges. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate project execution, effective coordination, and the ability to address issues promptly in dynamic field environments.

Job description

Field Engineer (I & II)

Samet Corporation   |   Greensboro, NC · Raleigh, NC · Charlotte, NC · Wilmington, NC · Charleston, SC · Savannah, GA

This is an evergreen talent-pipeline posting open across all six Samet offices — not a specific, currently open position.

Great careers rarely start with perfect timing. That’s why we like to meet strong Field Engineers before a seat opens up. Applying here puts you on our radar across all six Samet offices—so when the right opportunity fits, whether that’s now or a few months down the road, we already know you and you already know us. No perfect timing required; we’d just love to start the conversation.

As a Field Engineer at Samet, you’re an emerging leader at the center of how our projects get built. Working alongside the superintendent, you help coordinate trade partners, keep the schedule honest, document progress in Procore, and hold the line on safety and quality on an active job site. It’s hands-on, fast-moving work—and it’s where many of Samet’s best builders got their start.

Field Engineers grow into the field leaders our projects need. You’ll learn our systems, sharpen your construction knowledge through Samet University and Builders Building Builders, and build the judgment that carries you toward the Assistant Superintendent path and beyond. If you want to learn the craft of building from the people who do it best, this is where you start.

Levels & Experience

We hire Field Engineers at two levels and will place you based on your experience:

  • Field Engineer I — An early-career, on-site role supporting the superintendent’s coordination efforts. Best for candidates with a construction-related degree (or equivalent) who are eager to learn field management, safety, and quality firsthand. OSHA 30 required (or obtained shortly after hire).
  • Field Engineer II — A more independent role for those with prior field experience who can help build and maintain CPM and look-ahead schedules, manage RFIs and submittals under supervision, lead inspections, and mentor newer Field Engineers toward the Assistant Superintendent path.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide daily field oversight across all phases of assigned projects, keeping job site conditions safe, clean, and productive.
  • Help develop and maintain the project CPM schedule and four-week look-ahead schedules, monitoring progress and recommending corrective actions.
  • Document site progress thoroughly in Procore every day — progress reports, photos, and observations.
  • Promote and advance an injury-free job site through Samet’s award-winning safety program, completing weekly safety reports and site inspections.
  • Understand quality expectations and STOP any work that doesn’t support the project’s Quality Management Plan.
  • Develop and submit RFIs and assist with submittal reviews to confirm compliance with project specifications.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, and shop drawings to keep work properly coordinated and installed.
  • Manage and resolve punch lists, and meet with AHJs and third-party inspectors to facilitate inspections and approvals.
  • Engage subcontractors and suppliers daily through huddles and coordination meetings to keep the schedule on track.
  • Review and apply Samet TSWs, owner contracts, and trade partner scopes of work to your field responsibilities.
  • Use Bluebeam and other construction software fluently for documentation and workflows.
  • Support the team’s safety/ERM initiatives and uphold Samet’s professional image with clients, designers, and trade partners.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent field experience).
  • OSHA 30 certification (required for all field associates; may be obtained shortly after hire).
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam and a willingness to master Procore, P6, and other construction software.
  • Working knowledge of plans, specifications, and construction documentation processes.
  • Experience with RFIs, submittals, and punch lists (preferred; expected at the Field Engineer II level).
  • Understanding of project schedules and the ability to help maintain progress.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills, with sharp attention to detail.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety and an injury-free job site.
  • Initiative, a problem-solving mindset, and a genuine passion for a career in construction management.
  • Your own reliable transportation and an understanding that travel between sites is required.

Additional Requirements

Physical Demands: A field-intensive role with regular time on active construction sites and periodic office work. Frequently required to stand, walk (including on rough or uneven surfaces), climb stairs and ladders, balance, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, drive, and wear appropriate PPE; occasionally required to sit and handle hand and/or power tools, and infrequently to crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment: An active construction site in various stages of completion, with noise and light levels ranging from low to high. Unpleasant or potentially harmful fumes may occasionally be present (proper PPE provided). Temperature varies by location and season. Frequent travel is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Computer Skills: Working proficiency in Microsoft Office and SharePoint, with the ability to manage documentation in industry-standard construction software such as Procore and Bluebeam. Able to collaborate via Zoom or Teams and type professional correspondence.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Able to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions and to solve problems involving concrete variables on the job site.

Certificates and Licenses: OSHA 30 certification required. A valid driver’s license is required.

Why Samet

At Samet, we build more than projects—we build people. As one of the fastest-growing construction firms in the Southeast, we give our team the tools, training, and trust to take on real responsibility early and grow into the leaders our projects need.

You’ll learn directly from some of the best builders in the business, backed by structured development through Samet University and Builders Building Builders. And you’ll do it all The Samet Way—with integrity, a commitment to quality, and a belief that how we build matters as much as what we build.
