Job Summary
Intensive Outpatient Clinic (IOC) - Physician Assistant
Meaningful Care for People Who Need It Most
University of Utah Health is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Intensive Outpatient Clinic (IOC), a team-based clinic serving individuals with complex medical and psychosocial needs.
This is not a traditional outpatient role focused on volume.
The IOC operates within a capitated Medicaid model in partnership with University of Utah Health Plans. Our interdisciplinary team brings together medical providers, behavioral health clinicians, and care coordinators to deliver integrated, whole-person care designed to improve health outcomes and reduce avoidable emergency department visits and hospitalizations.
In 2023, the IOC was recognized by Governor Spencer Cox's One Utah Health Collaborative for innovation in comprehensive care delivery. The clinic was also featured in the Sundance Film Festival short film Meet Me Where I Am, which highlights the impact of person-centered, integrated care.
What You'll Do
  • Provide ambulatory and telehealth care for a complex patient population
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical exams
  • Manage medications and chronic conditions
  • Collaborate closely with behavioral health and care coordination teams
  • Participate in case reviews and interdisciplinary planning
  • Help improve outcomes for patients who have historically struggled to access effective care
  • Contribute to quality improvement and care model development

This is hands-on clinical work in a setting where teamwork and continuity matter.
Our Approach
The IOC is part of the University of Utah Population Health Center and works closely with primary care, learner clinics, dental services, dermatology, pediatrics, and behavioral health programs to support coordinated care.
As we grow, we continue refining our value-based care model in collaboration with University Health Plans. Clinical care is aligned with measurable outcomes - including reductions in emergency department use, inpatient admissions, and total cost of care.
Who Thrives Here
We are looking for clinicians who:
  • Enjoy team-based care
  • Are comfortable working with medically and socially complex patients
  • Have interest in trauma-informed care and substance use disorders
  • Value meaningful patient relationships over high-volume throughput
  • Are curious about population health and value-based care

Dual training (MPH, MBE, or similar) is welcomed but not required.
Early-career clinicians as well as experienced providers are encouraged to apply.
The Setting
The IOC is located at the University of Utah Population Health Center near Rose Park in Salt Lake City. This is an on-site clinical role.
Why Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City offers:
  • Immediate access to skiing, hiking, climbing, and cycling
  • Short commutes and strong work-life balance

  • A nationally ranked academic health system
  • A cost of living lower than many major metropolitan areas

University of Utah Health is a Level 1 Trauma Center and nationally recognized academic medical center. Here, clinicians work in collaborative teams where their contributions are visible and meaningful.
What You'll Gain
  • Experience in team-based, integrated care
  • Exposure to value-based Medicaid models

  • Meaningful relationships with patients and colleagues

  • Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications
Required:
  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
