Job description

Burns & McDonnell's South Central region is seeking an Assistant Environmental Engineer to join our Houston, Texas office. The Assistant Environmental Engineer will work within our region's Environmental & Regulatory Compliance (ERC) department and collaborate broadly in support of our Environmental Services practice.

The Assistant Environmental Engineer will support delivery of environmental assessments, permit applications, and compliance assurance tasks for various industries including transmission and distribution, power generation, chemical manufacturing, aviation, utilities, and transportation. This position supports the growth of the Environmental Services practice based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service.

Assigned tasks may include the following:

  • Collaborate with project teams to deliver a variety of tasks, including data collection, site visits, field surveys, agency consultations, permit applications, compliance plans, and reporting.

  • Assists with research and collection of project related data as required by the project managers. Assists with compiling studies and reports.

  • Assists with coordinating, executing, and monitoring all aspects of multidisciplinary projects with varying technical complexity.

  • Assist in reviewing regulations and identifying permits applicable to design, construction, and operation of various projects and facilities.
  • Assist in preparing permit matrices, permit applications, and technical reports.
  • Contribute to preparation of deliverables such as Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), and site inspection reports.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Bachelor Degree in Environmental Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program required or;
  • Bachelor Degree in Environmental or related Engineering Technology degree from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam required.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge in standard environmental engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory regimes preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA is strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
