Job description

Position Summary
The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for optimizing and managing all EHS programs and processes within the plant. This position will work closely with plant personnel to maximize overall efficiency and effectiveness of the EHS program. Additionally, this manager is responsible for all external communications with regulators, acts as the primary interface between the enforcement agencies and the plant operations. The Manager will interact with community interest groups, contractors, and consultants on a routine basis. This individual must demonstrate the ability to lead and influence operations staff not under their direct supervision. The position reports directly to the Director of EHS, has 1 direct report, and has the responsibility to lead the implementation and evaluation of critical EHS processes, programs, and procedures to achieve goals, objectives, and continuous improvements related to compliance as well as risk reduction.
Essential Functions/Key Deliverables
  • Define plant EHS goals to align with corporate business objectives.
  • Develop and implement Health, Safety and Environmental policies, procedures and systems.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with local law and regulations and requirements regarding occupational health and safety, environmental as well as Group standards.
  • Maintain conformity with internal instructions and procedures as well as environmental monitoring with the requirements of environmental permits.
  • Ensure legislative changes are communicated and reflected in local policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement risk assessments.
  • Assist in the completion of investigations related to environmental and safety incidents, and the completion of corrective actions.
  • Develop health programs in line with sickness/absence prevention and improving employee welfare.
  • Liaise with environmental and occupational health and safety officials as required.
  • Execute and/or oversee routine inspections, audits, and drills within the plant.
  • Conduct and ensure the delivery and tracking of all awareness and compliance training for employees within the facility that covers emergency procedures, workplace safety, environmental expectations and to include other relevant topics.
  • Liaise with management team, particularly engineering, to ensure that activities of contractors conform to all legislative requirements and with production departments, logistics, and the warehouse to ensure proper waste management.
  • Provide support and guidance to the management team and employees on matters of health and safety and environment.
  • Communicate relevant EHS expectations to the workforce.
  • Continually review, update and maintain EHS documentation and management systems, including training records, training materials, policies and procedures, operating manuals and other relevant documentation to demonstrate compliance with required federal, state, and local recordkeeping requirements, as well as all required external submission reports.
  • Review, monitor and report on local performance in Health, Safety and Environmental matters.
  • Ensure first responders are in place and training is up to date.
  • Set up and maintain the joint hourly/salary health and safety committee.
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of plant internal assessment program.
  • Ensure an effective contractor safety program is developed and executed.
  • Provide regular status reports to the Director of EHS and the Plant Manager.
  • Lead employee engagement efforts including oversight of committees and assessment processes.
  • Occasionally travel to other company business units as a member of an assessment team or to serve as a subject matter expert for resolution of a particular issue.
  • Perform other tasks reasonably corresponding with the role, as directed.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience
  • BS in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field from an accredited university is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience supporting Environmental, Health and Safety Compliance programs in industrial operations.
  • Professional certifications preferred.
  • High volume consumer-product manufacturing experience is preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to establish meaningful objectives and hold teams accountable for execution.
  • Must have strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations as well as relevant consensus standards (e.g., ANSI, NFPA).
  • Proactive, highly organized and committed to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Workers' Compensation Claims and Return-To-Work Program Management Experience.
  • Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis Experience.
  • Must have established interpersonal skills with a proven ability to reach consensus.
  • Experience with Air Permitting (Title V), NPDES, Wastewater Discharge, Water Appropriation, Hazardous Waste Management and Disposal, SPCC, FRP, and Spill Response.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 45001 and 14001 management system implementation and certification.
  • An ability to develop and adapt strategies with respect to environmental and safety performance.
  • Excellent communication skills with all stakeholders and audiences, and a strong ability to represent business interests to 3rd parties.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PPT, Excel, Word).
