Assistant Ecology Lab information

What is an assistant ecology lab?

An Assistant Ecology Lab, often referred to as an Ecology Lab Assistant, is a support role in ecological research settings such as universities, research institutions, or environmental agencies. Individuals in this position assist scientists and researchers with fieldwork, laboratory experiments, data collection, sample analysis, and equipment maintenance. They play a key role in ensuring that experiments run smoothly and data is accurately recorded. The position is ideal for those interested in environmental science and gaining hands-on research experience.

What are some common challenges faced by an assistant ecology lab and how can they be addressed?

Assistant Ecology Lab staff often encounter challenges such as managing multiple projects simultaneously, accurately collecting and recording field data, and adapting to variable outdoor conditions. Staying organized with detailed field notes and digital data entry can help address these challenges. Additionally, effective communication with lab supervisors and team members ensures smooth coordination of fieldwork and laboratory tasks. Embracing flexibility and continuous learning are key to thriving in this dynamic environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant ecology lab technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Ecology Lab Technician, you need a background in biology or environmental science, laboratory experience, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with tools such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, GIS software, and data analysis programs is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurate data collection and collaboration. These competencies ensure reliable research outcomes and contribute to the smooth operation of ecological studies.

Position Overview

Kenyon College invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Departments of Environmental Studies and Biology (Freshwater Ecosystem or Landscape Ecology) starting in July 2027. We seek a broadly trained ecologist with expertise in freshwater ecosystem or landscape ecology, with an interest in contributing to an interdisciplinary department. To complement current faculty expertise, we seek candidates whose research focuses on regional or global ecological or biogeochemical processes, preferably in freshwater systems. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching, including strong academic support, inclusive course experiences, and effective mentoring for our diverse student population.

Teaching Responsibilities

Teaching expectations are 5 courses per year, with 3 courses in the Environmental Studies Department (e.g., Introduction to Environmental Studies, Senior Seminar in Environmental Studies, and new lecture and/or lab courses at the upper level) and 2 courses in the Biology Department (e.g., Introductory Biology lecture or lab, Aquatic Systems Biology). Additional opportunities exist for interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship within and outside the sciences, including in Kenyon's interdisciplinary Program in Computing and the college's Science and Nature Writing initiative.

Research Responsibilities

We expect a vigorous research program that involves undergraduate students, leads to publications, and has potential to attract extramural funding. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree; post-doctoral experience is preferred.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree; post-doctoral experience is preferred. We encourage applications from all groups historically underrepresented in the sciences.
