Job description

Stamford Golf Authority — Sterling Farms Golf Course

Job Posting
Aug. 31, 2026

Stamford Golf Authority — Sterling Farms Golf Course

Stamford, CT·Full-time, salaried (exempt)·$75,000–$80,000·Reports to the Executive Director

The Opportunity

Sterling Farms Golf Course is an 18-hole municipal facility on 144 acres in Stamford, Connecticut, operated by the Stamford Golf Authority. The Authority is seeking an Assistant Manager of Golf Operations — the second-in-command of the operation and the senior authority on property when the Executive Director is away.

This is a large operation on a very busy public golf facility (50,000+ rounds) with a small full-time staff. During the season the Assistant Manager leads a seasonal workforce of more than fifty part-time employees — rangers, starters, range attendants, and support staff. The property also hosts three independent leased operations: the golf shop, the restaurant, and the tennis facility. Coordinating across those operators is a routine part of the job.

The role carries real financial responsibility. The Assistant Manager assists with preparation of the annual operating budget, tracks performance against it through the season, and reports to the Executive Director and the Authority. For someone whose next step is a general manager or executive director role at a public facility, this is a position that builds the full portfolio: people, money, vendors, and a board.

Core Responsibilities

Staff leadership

  • Assist with staff management, including training, scheduling, and performance review conversations.

Daily operations

  • Serve as the senior authority on property in the Executive Director's absence, overseeing operations and procedures.
  • Assist in project coordination and oversight.
  • Manage flow of play, monitor pace against the tee sheet, and conduct pace-of-play interventions with golfers.

Budget and financial management

  • Assist in preparing annual operating budget, tracking revenue and expenses against the budget through the season with general reporting.
  • Analyze tee sheet, green fee, cart, and range revenue and identify trends and opportunities.

Leased operator coordination

  • Coordinate daily with the golf shop, restaurant, tennis and theatre operators on scheduling, shared facilities, events, and property issues.
  • Support contract administration, including tracking operator obligations and flagging issues.

Events and programs

  • Support with clubs, outings, special event coordination with staff and Golf Shop.

Systems, reporting, and administration

  • Administer tee sheet and point-of-sale systems, including reporting, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain driving range, website and marketing software’s in place.
Qualifications

Required

  • Supervisory experience in golf, hospitality, recreation, retail, or another operation with a substantial hourly workforce.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including with the public in difficult moments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and business software; ability to learn new platforms quickly.
  • Sound independent judgment and the ability to run a property without direction.
  • Availability on weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings during the season.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree. Not required; relevant experience is weighted more heavily.
  • Golf industry background and working knowledge of the game, its rules, and etiquette.
  • Experience with tee sheet and point-of-sale platforms.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Annual salary of $75,000 to $80,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Health and retirement plan enrollment and paid time off upon successful completion of probationary period.
  • Golf privileges and discounts at Sterling Farms.
  • Direct reporting relationship to the Executive Director and regular exposure to the Authority board.
Timing

The Authority is recruiting for a start in early 2027, ahead of the 2027 season, so that the Assistant Manager leads the seasonal hiring and training cycle from the beginning. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Stamford Golf Authority is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
