JOB SUMMARY
Position assists with operational duties of the National New York Central Railroad Museum. Maintains exhibits to keep in displayable and functional condition. Performs customer service functions interacting face to face with patrons of the museum to provide an enjoyable experience to their visits. Works on artifact research and accessioning artifacts into Past perfect Program with direction of Coordinator.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assure running exhibits are operating during open hours while patrons are in the facility
  • Constructs and maintain exhibits; keeping artifacts straightened and cleaned and display fixtures in appropriate condition
  • Report extensive repair needs regarding exhibits and the facility to the Museum Coordinator
  • Assist with or coordinate existing exhibit revisions or installation of new exhibits and display equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance on running model train exhibits including cleaning and replacing tracks, adjustments and minor repairs to cars, etc.
  • Provide patrons with information about the museum, artifacts, and railroad history
  • Accessioning Artifacts with direction of Coordinator.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Opening and closing tasks including turning on off lights and any applicable equipment, setting up and shut down.
  • Facility cleaning duties, including sweeping, straightening up, clearing walkways of debris, snow and ice, and emptying trash containers, and cleaning bathrooms.
  • Answer the telephone and take messages as needed.
  • Greet visitors and collect admission fee as needed.
  • Assist visitors in the gift shop as needed.
  • Handle gift shop transactions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Minimal high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Must have previous experience in a similar position.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Must have valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Able to interact effectively with museum visitors in terms of being friendly, courteous, and conscientious.
  • Able to conduct sales transactions (operate register, make change, calculate sales tax, etc...)
  • Light construction skills (carpentry, painting and repairs)
  • Basic computer skills/software knowledge desirable but not essential.
  • Reliability, honesty, conscientiousness are essential personal qualities.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
  • Normal vision with or without corrections.
  • Ability to work with a pleasant personality and with all types of people.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in less than 30 hours per week standard office environment.
