Job description

The Aspen Times seeks a senior reporter/assistant editor to help lead the newsroom. This is a hybrid role with roughly equal focus on reporting, copy editing, and print production, making it ideal for a journalist who thrives both in the field and on the desk.

While reporting will cover general assignment, business, and community news, a significant portion of this role centers on shaping the final productediting stories for clarity, accuracy, and tone, and playing a key role in the design and production of the print edition.

On designated production days, you will take the lead in copy editing and page design, working closely with reporters, photographers, and designers to build pages, refine headlines, and ensure a polished, engaging newspaper. Experience with Adobe InDesign is strongly preferred, though candidates with a willingness to learn and an eye for layout and visual storytelling are encouraged to apply.

This position is a strong next step for a seasoned reporter looking to grow into an editing and production leadership role. Ideal candidates will bring at least three years of daily reporting experience, along with solid news judgment and attention to detail.

Outside of the job, youll live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, with access to mountains, cycling, hiking, world-class skiing, whitewater rafting, and gold medal fishing. Our office is located just two blocks from the Aspen Mountain Silver Queen Gondola.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report and write compelling stories across beats, including general assignment and business
  • Copy edits stories for accuracy, clarity, AP style, and tone
  • Lead print production on assigned days, including page design and layout
  • Build and design pages using Adobe InDesign (or demonstrate willingness to learn)
  • Write and refine headlines, cutlines, and other display type
  • Collaborate closely with reporters, photographers, and editors to shape content presentation
  • Pitch stories, guide reporters, and contribute to editorial planning
  • Edit and publish content across digital platforms
  • Respond quickly to breaking news
  • Meet deadlines consistently in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Develop strong relationships with sources and community leaders
  • Participate in staff meetings and communicate across departments
  • Take on additional duties and special projects as assigned
