Job description

Position Summary

We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Recovery Home Support Worker to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance client safety, assisting with activities of daily living, and encouraging fullparticipation in community activities and programs.


Under the direction of the Recovery Home Supervisor the Recovery Home Support Worker provides culturally informed crisis intervention, coping strategies, education, connections to community services, and support to individuals affected by mental illness, addictions, trauma, and crisis. The Recovery Home Support Worker will also engage in community relations activities to supporting clients and the community.


This is an on-call position.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with providing crisis support as needed and report immediately to supervisor.
  • Must maintain professional conduct, boundaries, and ethical standards with a commitment to the principles and values of the First Nations Communities.
  • Regularly update client records and charting in Mustimuhw database.
  • Participate in regular team meetings.
  • Encouraging, teaching, and assisting with household, community, and personal responsibilities such as shopping, cleaning, banking, medical appointments. and ensuring they are completed by the individual.
  • Supporting people in social situations to learn to feel comfortable and confident with others through appropriate interactions and build positive relationships.
  • Provide coaching and life skills teaching to clients within a residential setting where appropriate.
  • Safekeeping medication as per Section 65 of the Community Care and Assisted Living Act ASSISTED LIVING REGULATION
  • Assist with household supervision coverage and safety for clients.
  • Assist with client intake process as needed.
  • Plan and participate with clients in social, recreational, and vocational activities.
  • Capacity to communicate and uphold clients' rules, duties, and regulation in a polite but assertive manner.
  • Responsible for overseeing all household duties: meal preparation, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, sanitizing bedrooms and washrooms, garbage disposal, etc.
  • Purchase and maintain inventory of groceries and household supplies.
  • Provide coaching and life skills teaching to clients within a residential setting where appropriate.
  • Transport Clients to appointments as needed.


Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.


Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'ewqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively transport clients, students, or children.
  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the needs and schedules of clients and community needs. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.

What You Bring

Qualifications:

  • Formal education or training in social services, health care aid, mental health, addictions, or a related field. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience working within Indigenous communities, focusing on addictions and mental health.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Food safe Level 1 is required.
  • Current First Aid Certification.
  • Mental Health First Aid, Naloxone, Trauma Informed training.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.


Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island's culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

  • Experience working with Indigenous clients in crisis situations.
