We are seeking an Assistant Controller for our Headquarters office in Killeen, TX. The successful candidate will oversee payroll operations, month-end closing, and balance sheet reconciliations within a complex government contracting environment. This role is critical to ensuring payroll accuracy, labor compliance, indirect cost integrity, and timely financial close in accordance with GAAP, FAR, DFARS, and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS).

About the Position The Assistant Controller will work closely with HR, Program Management, and Contracts to ensure proper labor charging, payroll controls, and alignment with contract pricing and billing requirements. This position also plays a key role in audit readiness, external and internal controls, particularly for DCMA/DCAA compliance.

Key Responsibilities Payroll Oversight & Labor Compliance Oversee end-to-end payroll accounting, including payroll posting, labor distribution, reconciliations, and funding alignment. Review payroll registers, tax filings, benefits accruals, and payroll-related journal entries for accuracy and compliance. * Ensure proper labor charging in accordance with contract terms, pricing, CBAs, wage determinations, and internal policies.

Partner with HR to maintain accurate payroll hierarchies, labor categories, lead pay, differentials, and cost center mappings within the HRIS. Reconcile payroll subledger to the general ledger monthly and investigate/resolving discrepancies. * Support payroll audits, W-2/W-2C processing, and year-end payroll close activities.

Month-End Close & Reconciliations Lead and execute month-end close activities, ensuring timely and accurate completion. Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations (payroll liabilities, accrued expenses, prepaid costs, intercompany, cash, etc.). * Ensure indirect cost pools (Fringe, Overhead, G&A) are accurately calculated, supported, and reconciled monthly.

Review variance analyses and provide explanations for significant fluctuations. Maintain audit-ready documentation for all close activities. Government Contracting & Compliance * Ensure compliance with FAR Part 31, CAS, and applicable DFARS requirements.

Support preparation and review of: Invoices (Cost-Reimbursable, T&M, FFP) Incurred Cost Submissions (ICS) Provisional billing rate calculations Forward Pricing Rate Proposals (FPRP) Serve as a key accounting contact for DCMA/DCAA and external CPA audits. Monitor internal controls related to payroll, labor distribution, and financial reporting. Systems, Controls & Process Improvement Support ERP/HRIS implementations, enhancements, and integrations (e.g., Paycom, Unanet).

Establish and refine payroll and close procedures to improve accuracy, timeliness, and audit readiness. Assist the Sr VP of Mission Support with internal control design, documentation, and testing. * Mentor and review work performed by Payroll personnel and Budget Analyst personnel.

Qualifications Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. 6-10 years of progressive accounting experience in a government contracting environment. * Demonstrated hands-on experience managing payroll accounting and month-end close.

Strong working knowledge of FAR, DFARS, and CAS. Prior experience supporting DCMA/DCAA audits strongly preferred. * Experience with incurred cost submissions and indirect rate structures.

Proficiency with accounting and payroll systems; Unanet, Paycom, Deltek Costpoint, or similar GovCon ERP experience preferred. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations, variance analysis). * High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and ability to manage deadlines.

Preferred Attributes Prior experience in a mid-size or large DoD contractor environment. Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with HR, Contracts, and Program Management. * Proven ability to improve payroll controls and close processes.

Comfortable operating as a hands-on accounting leader, not just a reviewer. High level of integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality.
