Job description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead core accounting operations for a detail-oriented services organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This position plays a central role in maintaining financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and supporting business planning through timely reporting and budgeting. The ideal candidate brings strong leadership capability, sound judgment, and a hands-on approach to billing, payables, tax coordination, and team development.
Responsibilities:
• Direct day-to-day accounting activities, including the general ledger, chart of accounts, fixed assets, reconciliations, and oversight of client trust balances.
• Establish, monitor, and refine internal control practices to support accurate vendor payments, payroll activity, client invoicing, and trust account management.
• Contribute to the annual budget process and ongoing forecasting efforts, while preparing monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial reporting for leadership review.
• Communicate and reinforce finance policies, procedures, and operational standards across the department and broader organization.
• Coordinate income tax support activities by preparing documentation and working with external tax advisors to help ensure timely filings.
• Oversee the client billing function, including processes, controls, and financial system usage related to invoicing operations.
• Manage accounts payable operations, including payment workflows, electronic funds transfers, wire activity, and related disbursement controls.
• Recommend and update policies governing employee expense reimbursements and vendor payment procedures, and serve as an authorized check signer.
• Lead finance team staffing efforts by evaluating resource needs, recruiting talent, guiding employee performance, and supporting ongoing training and succession planning.
• Improve departmental efficiency by identifying opportunities to streamline procedures, automate routine tasks, and maintain reliable coverage for key finance roles.• 5+ years of progressive accounting or controllership experience, preferably within a services environment.
• Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and month-end and year-end close activities.
• Experience overseeing legal billing or similarly detailed client invoicing processes.
• Familiarity with annual audited financial statements and supporting audit preparation requirements.
• Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to use formulas for analysis, reporting, and reconciliation.
• Demonstrated success supervising staff, managing performance, and developing high-functioning teams.
• Effective leadership, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities accurately.
