Better Community Living, Inc. (BCL) is a premier human service provider where families have a voice, and individuals choose to be a part of our living and working community. BCL serves the Greater New Bedford Area, providing more than just living spaces for individuals with developmental disabilities and autism. With 30 years of experience, we provide these individuals with the support to become productive members of the community while establishing empowering friendships.
BLC has an immediate opening for an Assistant Controller who wants to join a experienced leadership team, supporting our mission. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and function of general ledger accounting, internal cash and financial controls, financial reporting, and financial compliance systems of BCL. This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and collaborates with Human Resources, Payroll, Billing, Accounts Payable, and Program Managers, continuously improving systems and workflows to support a mission-driven, growing organization.
Essential responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The Assistant Controller is accountable for the effective day-to-day functioning of all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activity.
  • Leads the month-end and year-end close process and the production of all monthly financial statements and related information and analyses necessary for leadership and Board presentation, including variance analysis and financial projections.
  • Provide daily inputs to cash and KPI reporting.
  • Participates in the development, communication, and achievement of organizational financial policies and goals, including strong internal controls. Focus on reconciliation and cash controls for corporate processes, and especially for cash and expense management for residences and expense reimbursements.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of all information, reports, schedules, analyses, and documentation required for timely and efficient completion of monthly and annual financial statements, and 401(k) benefit plan audits, required tax and information returns, and all other required compliance filings.
  • Actively participates the ongoing evolution of accounting operations with a goal of standardized, process-driven, and paperless workflows that improve accuracy, efficiency, and transparency.
  • Travel among resident and day program locations for audit and accounting process improvements.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
  • Flexibility and availability to work varied hours especially during budget, audit, and monthly and year-end closing periods.

Required Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS in Accounting, CPA is a plus.
  • Five-seven years of experience in the areas of financial accounting, financial reporting, managerial accounting, and/or senior accountant/assistant controllership.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the accounting and reporting requirements under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP) as they relate to not-for-profit organizations.
  • Proven good judgement and demonstrated problem solving ability.
  • Work well in a servant leadership environment, supporting our clients in their daily challenges.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Must have strong Excel and accounting software knowledge and skills. Blackbaud is a plus.

Salary: $80,000 to $90,000 to commensurate with education and experience.
