Job description

Controller

Calyx Containers  |  West Valley City, UT  |  Full-Time, On-Site  |  Reports to the President

Compensation is competitive and we share full range in the first conversation.

About Calyx

Calyx Containers is a 10-year-old packaging innovation company primarily serving the cannabis industry from Salt Lake City. We design, manufacture, and source compliant packaging - rigid containers, flexible packaging, and labels - through a hybrid model that combines our own domestic digital manufacturing facility with an international partnership network. This year we are launching Calyx Command, our new digital quoting and ordering platform, which is transforming how customers get from artwork to delivered product and helping us expand quickly into other industries. We are a manufacturing business, a sourcing business, and now a technology enabled one - and we need the person who keeps score across all three.

The Role

You will own the entire accounting and financial operations of the company, end to end. This is a hands-on, in-the-numbers controllership at a business with real complexity: physical inventory and WIP on a production floor, standard costs, multi-state sales tax, international supplier payments, and a growing software layer on top. You will run a tight monthly close, keep cash visibility sharp, and build the internal controls of a company preparing for its next stage of growth.

You will partner directly with the President who retains strategic finance and runs it on a modern, automation-heavy toolset. That split is deliberate. You will not be building alone. You inherit a rockstar senior staff accountant who knows our systems, our customers and our close. Your job is to make the accounting engine run so well that every strategic decision is built on numbers nobody has to double-check.

What You Own

  • Monthly close and financial package. A disciplined 5-7 business day close with a complete reporting package: P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and departmental detail, delivered to leadership on a fixed calendar, every month, no exceptions.
  • Weekly cash forecast. A rolling 13-week cash forecast maintained and reviewed weekly, tied to AR, AP, and production commitments.
  • Accounts receivable. Invoicing accuracy, collections cadence, and DSO management across a customer base that includes large multi-state operators.
  • Accounts payable. Vendor payments across domestic suppliers, international sourcing partners, and freight, with clean approval workflows.
  • Credit and risk. Customer credit limits, terms decisions, and exposure management.
  • Inventory and cost accounting. Standard costing, WIP, variance analysis, and cycle count discipline for our manufacturing operation, plus landed cost on sourced product.
  • Fixed assets. Capitalization policy, depreciation schedules, and asset tracking for a capital-equipment-heavy production floor.
  • Internal controls. Segregation of duties, approval matrices, reconciliation discipline, and documentation that would stand up to outside scrutiny.
  • Sales tax. Multi-state nexus tracking, registration, filing, and exemption certificate management.
  • Payroll administration. Accurate, on-time payroll and benefits deductions executed through Gusto, supported by our staff accountant.

Who You Are

  • A manufacturing accountant at your core. You have lived in standard costs, inventory reconciliations, and shop-floor reality, not just services or SaaS books.
  • Deep in NetSuite. You have owned NetSuite as the system administrator or primary power user, and you treat the ERP as your responsibility, not IT's.
  • Relentless about the close calendar. Deadlines in this role are commitments, and you hold yourself and your team to them.
  • Present and available. This is an on-site leadership role at an operating company. When the floor, the sales team, or leadership needs a number or a decision, you are reachable and responsive during the working day.
  • A direct communicator. You flag problems early, say what you think plainly, and bring solutions with the bad news.
  • An automator. You would rather build a workflow, a saved search, or an AI-assisted process than add headcount or hours to a problem.
  • An owner, energized by change. New products, new systems, a new digital platform - you see the transformation as the fun part and take full responsibility for outcomes in your lane.
  • Genuinely excited about AI-enabled productivity. Leadership here uses AI daily to compress analysis, reporting, and document work, and we expect the same appetite from you. You see AI as leverage for your team, not a threat to it.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with 3+ years as a Controller in a manufacturing or physical-product business.
  • Hands-on NetSuite expertise, including chart of accounts design, item and inventory setup, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a full monthly close and cost accounting for inventory-carrying operations.
  • Multi-state sales tax experience.
  • CPA or CMA preferred but not required if the operating experience is there.
  • Experience with Gusto or similar payroll platforms is a plus. Exposure to regulated industries is a plus.
  • Comfort using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) in real accounting work - reconciliations, flux analysis, documentation - or a demonstrated hunger to get there fast."

How This Role Is Scoped

This role is 100% accounting and financial operations. Strategic finance stays with the President. HR is handled by a dedicated People function. The scope is designed so an excellent controller can fully own it, be visibly excellent at it, and build the strongest accounting engine this company has ever had.

Why This Role, Why Now

Calyx just turned ten. We are launching a technology platform that changes how packaging gets bought, our domestic manufacturing facility is scaling, and the operation behind all of it needs an owner. You will have real authority, a direct line to company leadership, and a mandate to build.

To apply, send your resume to alex@calyxcontainers.com with the subject line "Controller." Cover letters encouraged. We respond to every qualified applicant within one week.
