Cost Controller

Toronto, Ontario

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President, Finance, the Cost Controller is responsible for supporting and driving the financial health, tracking, and forecasting of our construction projects. This role plays a critical part in the Finance Team and works closely with project managers, estimators, and field teams.

You will be responsible for overseeing project budgets from inception to completion, ensuring every resource is used efficiently and all financial aspects align with both our business goals and regulatory standards.

PRIMARY SCOPE OF ROLE

Project Financial Management & Forecasting

  • Drive execution of project cost tracking, budget management, and financial forecasting from project start to final completion.

  • Own endtoend delivery of cost control reporting, ensuring that cost, quality, and timeline goals are met across all construction developments.

  • Analyze construction material costs and supply chain expenses to advise the business on financial implications and cost-saving opportunities.

  • Ensure alignment of project expenditures with established budgets, proactively identifying variances and financial risks.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Advisory

  • Partner with crossfunctional teams including Project Managers, Estimators, and field-based construction crews to ensure total cost accountability.

  • Communicate insights, risks, and recommendations regarding budgets and spending trends clearly to site teams and project leadership.

  • Support leadership decisionmaking by providing the VP, Finance with accurate, regular cost-to-complete reports and financial visibility.

Compliance & Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and financial effectiveness within project delivery frameworks.

  • Recommend and implement process enhancements for sound cost control systems, principles, and practices.

  • Ensure adherence to construction compliance standards, legal frameworks, and regulatory requirements.

Financial Risk Mitigation

  • Verify financial alignment across all active contract variations, change orders, and progress billings.

  • Mitigate budget overruns by applying proactive cost control measures and early warning indicators.

  • Maintain a highly accurate, auditable trail of all project-related financial transactions and resource allocations.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • 5+ years of construction cost control experience, or a similar role within the construction industry.

  • University degree in Finance, Accounting, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) or an equivalent combination of advanced corporate training and experience.

  • Proven experience overseeing complex construction projects from a dedicated cost management perspective.

  • Strong knowledge of cost control systems, financial tracking principles, and industry-standard practices.

  • Working knowledge of Primavera P6 scheduling software.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and effective interpersonal skills to translate financial data into actionable insights for construction crews.
