Position: Assistant Controller

RemX is proud to represent our prestigious client in the commercial construction industry who is seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support and strengthen their accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to executive leadership, this role will play a critical part in overseeing the accounting function, managing financial reporting, supporting operational decision-making, and ensuring accurate job costing across multiple projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional with construction, demolition, excavation, heavy civil or other project-based industry experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys partnering with operations to drive profitability and financial performance.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while promoting adherence to established accounting policies and procedures
  • Lead and manage month/year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations and financial statement preparation
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial reports ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP
  • Oversee all job costing functions ensuring costs are accurately captured, allocated and reported
  • Review project budgets, committed costs, change orders, labor allocation, equipment utilization, subcontractor costs and overall project profitability
  • Partner with project managers and operations leadership to monitor project financial performance and provide cost analysis and forecasting
  • Analyze job cost reports and investigate cost variances, identifying risks and opportunities for improved project profitability
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial reporting processes
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial planning activities
  • Support audits and serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors, lenders, and tax professionals
  • Manage fixed assets, depreciation schedules, and construction-related accounting functions
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting operations and enhance financial visibility across projects
  • Support financial system enhancements and reporting initiatives

Requirements

  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within commercial demolition, excavation, construction, heavy civil, industrial services, or other project-based industries with transferable experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Hands-on experience with job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, project accounting and project profitability analysis required
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze project budgets, estimate-to-complete reporting, cost-to-complete projections and cost variance analysis
  • Dedicated work ethic, ability to work effectively in fast paced settings with multi-shifting priorities
  • Partner with project managers and operations leaders to improve project financial performance
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across departments
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency required
  • Proficiency with ERP systems such as Computer East, Deltek or similar preferred
