Job description

The Assistant Controller plays a key role in the daytoday accounting and financial operations of the bakery. This role supports the month-end close, cost accounting, inventory control, financial analysis, and compliance activities. The ideal candidate has foundational accounting experience and a desire to grow into a leadership role in manufacturing finance.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Assist with monthend and yearend close, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements, management reports, broker and other sales reports, and operational dashboards.
  • Support external audits as needed.

Cost Accounting & Inventory

  • Analyze production yields, scrap/waste, labor efficiency, and overhead absorption.
  • Partner with production supervisors to validate daily/weekly production reporting.
  • Oversee physical inventory counts and cycle count programs.

Operational & FP&A Support

  • Provide daily/weekly reporting on key KPIs (throughput, efficiency, waste, labor costs, etc.).
  • Participate in annual budgeting and ongoing reforecasting processes.
  • Support margin analysis, pricing updates, and customer/product profitability studies.
  • Assist with capital expenditure tracking and ROI evaluations.

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure adherence to internal controls, GAAP compliance, and company accounting policies.
  • Support food industry audits requiring financial documentation (e.g., SQF, BRC, or internal QA standards).
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.
