Assistant Contractor information

What is an assistant contractor?

Assistant contractors are professionals who support lead contractors or project managers on construction projects. Their duties often include coordinating schedules, managing supplies, communicating with subcontractors, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. They help keep projects on track by handling various administrative and on-site tasks, making them essential for efficient project execution. Assistant contractors typically have a background in construction or project management and may be working toward becoming lead contractors themselves.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant contractor?

To thrive as an Assistant Contractor, you need a solid understanding of construction methods, project management basics, and relevant safety regulations, often supported by a high school diploma or trade school certification. Familiarity with construction management software, blueprint reading, and basic hand and power tools is commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills help you collaborate effectively with teams and manage on-site challenges. These competencies are essential for ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required standards.

What are some common challenges assistant contractors face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Assistant Contractors often juggle several projects at different stages, which can make prioritizing tasks and maintaining clear communication challenging. Staying organized, meeting deadlines, and coordinating with various teams—such as suppliers, subcontractors, and inspectors—are daily hurdles. Adapting quickly to shifting project needs and resolving unexpected issues on-site are key skills that help Assistant Contractors succeed in a dynamic work environment.

What is the difference between Assistant Contractor vs Construction Supervisor?

Assistant Superintendent

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Superintendent to help create the field leadership capacity needed to deliver commercial construction projects safely, efficiently, and with a high standard of quality. This role exists to provide hands‑on support to the Superintendent in coordinating daily site operations, keeping work on schedule, maintaining strong communication with trade partners, and ensuring project expectations are executed consistently from start to finish.

In this role, you will gain practical experience in jobsite coordination, short‑term planning, scheduling, safety leadership, quality control, trade partner management, and project closeout. It is an excellent opportunity for a construction professional who wants to strengthen field operations knowledge and build the skills needed to grow into a Superintendent role within a collaborative, safety‑focused team.

This role supports projects across Southeast and Central Michigan. Ideal candidates may live in or near Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Chelsea, Jackson, or other surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning and coordinating short‑term (2–4 week) jobsite activities and communicate plans with trade contractors
  • Support development and maintenance of the project schedule, including three‑week lookahead planning
  • Monitor and support contractor performance to ensure alignment with project timelines and requirements
  • Help facilitate timely approvals and documentation with architects, engineers, and governing authorities
  • Uphold jobsite safety, quality, environmental standards, and cleanliness at all times
  • Assist with project close‑out and ensure all work is completed in accordance with company standards
  • Maintain detailed daily reports documenting site activity, progress, and key events
  • Track labor hours and submit trade hours and labor reports as required
  • Participate in and help lead onsite coordination and progress meetings
Qualifications

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience in a Superintendent or similar field role
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, or related field
Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of commercial construction processes
  • Excellent planning, scheduling, and organizational skills
  • Effective communication skills with clients, project teams, and trade partners
  • Ability to manage risk and support cost control efforts
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
Technical Proficiency:
  • Experience with Project Sight, Phoenix, Textura, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Diverse and inclusive workplace culture
