Job description

Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Comptroller to join our team at a Non-Profit Charter Middle School. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting and financial management, particularly within the non-profit sector. This role is crucial for ensuring the financial integrity of our organization, overseeing all accounting functions, and providing strategic financial guidance to support our mission.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management:

  • Develop, manage, and monitor annual operating budgets in coordination with school leadership.
  • Accurate and timely accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and oversee annual audits.
  • Assist with grant budgeting, reporting, and compliance.
  • Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard school assets.

Human Resources Management:

  • Administer payroll and employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave policies.
  • Maintain employee records in compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and school HR policies.
  • Assist school leadership with performance management and employee relations.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff and benefits providers.
  • Manage employee handbooks, HR policies, and personnel documentation.

Operations & Compliance:

  • Ensure proper documentation and compliance for state and federal education grants.
  • Collaborate with school leadership on strategic planning and operational decisions.
  • Assist in procurement and vendor contract management.
  • Support risk management and insurance processes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or Finance (Master’s preferred)
  • CPA is a plus.
  • 3–5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in a school or nonprofit setting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, payroll, and HR laws.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and HR/payroll systems.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
