Job description

Coding Lead

The Coding Lead is responsible for overseeing medical coding operations, ensuring that coding staff perform their duties accurately and handle records and data according to federal/state healthcare laws and regulations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides training, coaching, and direction of staff to achieve optimal performance in the work area.
  • Assist in monitoring quality standards to ensure compliance with coding rules and regulations.
  • Assist in monitoring productivity to ensure timely posting, filing, and capturing of all charges for month and year end closes.
  • Assists in planning and monitoring coding functions and processes to meet the department's goals and ensure adherence to compliance with guidelines and regulations.
  • Monitors of coding sources staff use to obtain coding advice and provide regular and consistent coding education.
  • Acts as a liaison with business offices, physician offices, other departments, and leadership to identify and resolve coding issues.
  • Provides timely coding updates and relays information to management about coding changes, regulations, modifier issues, or changes in specialty society, national or local coverage determinations.
  • Assists in performing audits following parameters recommended by CMS or the Office of Inspector General.
  • Review patient documents for accuracy to include but not limited to office visits, surgical, and non-surgical procedures.
  • Verify that all codes are current and active.
  • Ensure proper coding on provider documentation and reports incomplete documentation to provider and/or clinical staff.
  • Meet daily coding production expectations.
  • Understand coding and reimbursement regulations and recognize the order in which services are billed to ensure maximum reimbursement by reading various coding and insurance newsletters and websites.
  • Accurately post services based on global services data by applying NCCI edits, AAOC, NASS and ASSH Global Guidelines for all applicable insurance carriers.
  • Post daily receipts and correct posting or coding errors (denials) in practice management system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, work longer than eight (8) hour shifts, and to work both day/evening shifts. Work may hand dexterity as well as the need to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Reasonable accommodation can be made to enable people with disabilities to perform the described essential functions of the job.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent personal and telephone contact with patients, physicians, and other healthcare personnel. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Work may involve interaction with injured or sick patients.

Travel between all Lakeshore Bone & Joint facilities is required for this position.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Medical Coding Certification required.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in healthcare management preferred.
