What is an assistant civil engineer?

Assistant Civil Engineers are entry-level professionals who support senior engineers in planning, designing, and overseeing construction projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings. They assist with site inspections, preparing reports, analyzing data, and ensuring projects comply with regulations and safety standards. Their role often includes working with drafting software, coordinating with contractors, and helping to resolve technical issues that arise during construction. This position serves as a starting point for a career in civil engineering, offering valuable hands-on experience and training.

What are the typical responsibilities of an assistant civil engineer within a project team?

As an Assistant Civil Engineer, you will often support senior engineers in designing, planning, and overseeing construction projects, such as roads, bridges, or buildings. Your tasks may include preparing drawings using CAD software, conducting site inspections, collecting and analyzing data, and ensuring projects comply with safety and regulatory standards. You'll frequently collaborate with architects, contractors, and other engineers, contributing to meetings and helping resolve on-site challenges. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and a clear path for advancement to more senior engineering positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant civil engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Civil Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and construction methods, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and project management software, as well as certifications like EIT (Engineer-in-Training), are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you excel in coordinating with senior engineers, contractors, and stakeholders. These capabilities ensure accurate project execution, regulatory compliance, and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Job Title: Entry-Level Civil / Environmental Engineer

Job Description

This entry-level Civil or Environmental Engineer role focuses on supporting a wide range of solid waste projects, including landfill and landfill gas system design, permitting, construction plans, and construction oversight. You will split your time between office-based design and analysis work and field-based activities that provide hands-on learning opportunities. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement when field presence is not required and provides strong opportunities for professional growth within a mission-driven, employee-owned firm dedicated to smart climate solutions and environmental improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Assist project staff in overseeing drilling activities, including probe and well installation, borehole logging, well development, well construction, monitoring, and sampling.
  • Conduct and document construction quality assurance observations and similar construction inspections to verify compliance with design plans, specifications, and construction requirements.
  • Perform quality control reviews on work products such as reports, design plans, calculations, and data prior to submission to the Project or Task Manager.
  • Work with the Project or Task Manager to coordinate activities with contractors, subcontractors, and clients to support successful project delivery.
  • Compile field and analytical data and help prepare portions of technical reports, progressing toward the ability to prepare complete reports such as environmental site assessments, emissions reports, monitoring reports, groundwater and soil investigation reports, compliance reports, and other project documentation.
  • Assist in preparing permit applications and regulatory agency submittals and responses, including gathering supporting documentation and researching regulatory requirements.
  • Compile data and prepare basic engineering calculations to support reports, design documents, and other technical studies.
  • Support design efforts for landfills and landfill gas systems, including preparation of construction plans and related documentation.
  • Participate in construction oversight activities in the field, including observing contractor work, documenting progress, and reporting issues to the project team.
  • Use AutoCAD and Civil 3D, under supervision, to assist in preparing engineering drawings and design layouts for solid waste and related civil infrastructure projects.
  • Apply Microsoft Excel and Word to organize data, perform basic analyses, and prepare clear and accurate technical documentation.
  • Contribute to projects involving wastewater distribution, landfill operations, and related environmental infrastructure as your experience grows.
  • Engage in ongoing learning to build proficiency in technical report writing, regulatory compliance, and solid waste engineering practices.
  • Collaborate closely with a team of engineers to support project schedules, deliverables, and quality standards.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • At least 3+ months of civil engineering or civil engineering internship experience, with total experience ideally up to one year.
  • Interest in obtaining an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification in the near future.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD at an intermediate level (approximately 5 out of 10).
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and Word at an above-average level (approximately 7 out of 10).
  • Foundational ability in technical report writing (approximately 5 out of 10).
  • Basic understanding of wastewater distribution systems.
  • Ability to support design and construction oversight for landfill and landfill gas projects.
  • Capability to perform basic engineering calculations and compile technical data for reports and design documents.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and walk through rough terrain on a regular basis to support field work.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to construction quality assurance and compliance with design specifications.
  • Effective communication skills to work with project managers, contractors, subcontractors, and clients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using Civil 3D for civil engineering design.
  • Prior experience working on landfill projects.
  • Experience with wastewater projects or systems.
  • Exposure to environmental site assessments, emissions monitoring, groundwater and soil investigations, or regulatory compliance projects.
  • Familiarity with preparing permit applications and regulatory submittals.
  • Interest in working on projects that reduce methane emissions, repurpose contaminated properties, produce alternative energy, or support carbon sequestration.
  • Desire to grow within an employee-owned firm and build a long-term career in civil and environmental engineering.

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid work environment, with an expectation to be in the office at least once per week when not required in the field. Approximately 50% of your time will be spent in the office performing design, analysis, and reporting tasks, and about 50% will be spent in the field supporting drilling activities, construction oversight, monitoring, and sampling. You will work alongside a team of about ten engineers based in the local office who support projects in the region. Field work may involve long days outdoors, walking over rough terrain, and lifting up to 50 pounds as part of drilling, monitoring, and construction activities. Office work will involve extensive use of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and other standard engineering and reporting tools.
