Job description

Overview
Is fully responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of a high pressure boiler plant and refrigeration plant for shift or watch period.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and its employees.
- Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department. Contribution and participation includes data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, consistent adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center (a) Safety and Security Policies, (b) Risk Management: Incident and Occurrence Reporting, (c) Infection Control Policies and Procedures and (d) Patient and Customer Service.
- Cleans, lubricates, maintains and repairs boiler room equipment, piping systems and other hospital special systems and equipment. Installs and constructs replacements and improvements as directed.
- Controls operation of all boiler and refrigeration plant equipment for proper generation of steam and chiller, water heating, cooking and sterilization maintenance of hot/chilled water temperatures. Makes emergency repairs.
- Monitors and controls operation of auxiliary generator, air conditioning and ventilation equipment; makes emergency repairs.
- Oversees the Engineering Plant in the absence of the Director of Engineering or Assistant Director of Engineering.
- Keeps the plant operations log for his shift and note any unusual problems or conditions for the attention of the Director of Engineering.
- Monitors alarm panel for special systems such as Morgue or Blood Bank temperature. Takes appropriate action in case of failures.
- Responds to emergency problems with elevators, electrical systems, and flooding or plant equipment failures. Makes emergency repairs.
- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when working with patients, families, visitors and/or hospital employees.
- Serves on Hospital Fire Response Team when back-up plant coverage is available or unnecessary.
Qualifications
- Has a minimum of two (2) years in a full independent charge of a shift for operation of a large high pressure boiler heating and refrigeration plant.
- Understands maintenance and operational manuals.
- Can read and interpret plans diagrams and electrical schematics.
- Has institutional experience, including knowledge of sterilizers, pneumatic tube systems, suction systems refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, auxiliary generators, electrical, plumbing and laboratory systems.
- NYC High Pressure Boiler Operators License
- Unlimited Refrigeration Operator License
- NYC Fire Department Certificates of Fitness as may be required
- High School or GED
