POSITION TITLE: Sports Medicine - Athletic Trainer

REPORTS TO: Director of Athletics


QUALIFICATIONS:

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 2+ years preferred

EDUCATION: Master's Degree Required

CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Must be BOC certified, current CPR/AED certification, NATA Membership preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must be knowledgeable about risk reduction, wellness and health literacy; assessment, evaluation and diagnosis of injuries and illnesses; critical incident management; therapeutic intervention and healthcare administration and professional responsibility.

Decision-Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to play decisions.

Attention to Detail: Athletic trainers should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high-stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.

Must be able to organize, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

Requirements

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • The Sports Medicine Team is essential in supporting the health and performance of the Westcliff student-athletes while contributing to the excellence of the athletic programs.
  • Adhere to Westcliff University, Westcliff University Athletics, California Pacific Conference and NAIA policies and procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules and procedures.
  • Foster cooperative relationships with fellow staff members within the department.
  • Support the athletic department goals and philosophies as described by the Director of Athletics and work to achieve and uphold the department's mission statement and core values.
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward performing job duties and in working with other staff members.
  • Exhibit professional decorum during working hours.
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments and at various times of the day, including weekends and holidays.
  • Proficient in computer skills
  • CPR/AED certified and current membership with the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the organization and supervision of student-athletes in all sports, with primary sports responsibility will be determined by the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine
  • Assist with pre-participation physical examinations and medical clearance paperwork.
  • Prepare timely and accurate documents, e.g., injury/illness reports, care and reconditioning updates, daily athletic training records, injury/illness summaries for coaches, medical and other correspondence. Properly document injuries as well as treatment and rehabilitation sessions of injured athletes.
  • Assist with administering athletic insurance and follow up with Insurance Coordinator and student athlete as needed
  • Utilize evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation techniques when providing health care for student-athletes.
  • Refer student athletes to the Team Physician, Physical Therapists, Hospital Emergency Rooms, or other Allied Healthcare Facilities/ or Specialists, as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with Coaches, Team Physicians, Athletic Training staff and other Westcliff University staff (including Academics) regarding injured or sick athletes including strength and conditioning parameters and limitations associated with injury rehabilitation.
  • Maintain athletic training facilities and equipment in a safe and sanitary condition.
  • Maintain a work schedule in the athletic training room in cooperation with and as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • Familiar and up to date with current protocols regarding Concussion, Heat Illness, Inclement Weather, etc.
  • Follows departmental Emergency Action Plans
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine.

NUMBER/DESCRIPTION OF PATIENTS (STUDENT-ATHLETES) RESPONSIBLE FOR:

There are approximately 400 student-athletes currently enrolled at Westcliff, and this number is expected to grow as the university sponsors more sports programs. Sports assignments and coverage schedules will be determined as the sports medicine team grows.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

As Westcliff Athletics is still growing, the university currently practices and hosts competitions at off-campus locations. Local travel will be required to cover practices and home competitions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical demands of being able to lift, pull, push, grasp and bend while lifting up to 80lbs.
