Job description

The Assistant Coach shall function under the direction and supervision of the Head Coach and Athletic
Director. Above all else, this employee shall be a vital spiritual and educational leader, exercising supervisory
responsibility over all functions, duties, and responsibilities related to the safe and successful operation of the
athletic team to which he or she is assigned. This individual shall be selfless and cooperative, modeling such
behavior to peers, students, student-athletes, fellow head coaches, assistant coaches, parents, and community
members. The Assistant Coach will assist with conducting practices, motivating student-athletes, integrating a
Christian worldview, developing devotions, retaining athletes, planning practices, communicating with student-
athletes and their families, and exposing student-athletes to proven techniques and strategies.

Essential Functions
The Assistant Coach shall display an ability to clearly, professionally, and persuasively articulate Crean
Lutheran’s positions regarding its philosophy of education, its educational and co-curricular programs,
and its intentional Christ-centered and Biblically-based worldview;
Incorporate knowledge related to techniques and tactics of the sport to student-athletes, able to
effectively coach and mentor athletes;
Build personal self-confidence and the desire to compete and strive to succeed in each student-athlete;
Systematically and intentionally coach each student athlete, appropriately maximizing their strengths
and addressing their areas for improvement;
Possess the ability to help individuals set goals and identify steps to achieve those goals;
Provide a nurturing, encouraging, and safe environment in all situations for student-athletes, students,
parents, fans, faculty, staff, and community members;
Possess the ability to provide spiritual leadership to students, families, and other members of the Crean
Lutheran High School family;
Assist the Head Coach in the supervision of athletes, facilitating a safe, secure, and hazard-free
environment;
Effectively communicate warmth and understanding when dealing with administrative colleagues,
teachers, students, parents, and the community;
Possess a sympathetic attitude toward the views of other people and practice positive cooperation;
Work as a team member, showing concern and support for other CLHS programs, whether they are
athletic or academic;
Communicate regularly with the Head Coach, advising him or her of issues, concerns, and needs as well
as potential issues, concerns, and needs;
Fully understand, appreciate, and embrace all aspects of the Employee Handbook, Coaches Handbook,
and Athletic Department policies;
Respond to all communication in a Christ-filled and winsome manner within 24 hours;
Embrace CLHS’ approach to being a teacher first and a coach second;
Embrace CLHS’ approach to student-athletes, specifically student’ athletes being students first and
athletes second.
Incorporate and proclaim Christ and His teachings in every aspect of the sports program;
Conduct himself or herself at all times, in all places, and in all circumstances, in a manner that honors
Christ;
Strive to find ways to allow every student-athlete to feel valued for their contributions, large or small, to
the program;
Effectively maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and fans;
Passionately support the golf tournament as an avenue of financial support for the Athletic Department
and athletic teams;
Assist the Head Coach in instructing players in rules, regulations, equipment use, and techniques of the
sport;
Be responsible for the supervision and safety of athletes before, during, and after practices, games and
tournaments, ensuring their well-being and the delivery of them to an appropriate and approved parent
or guardian;
Organize and direct individual and small group practice and/or activities and/or exercises as directed by
the Head Coach;
Assess player skills, monitors players during competition and practice, and keep the Head Coach
informed of changes in player skill, concerns, and potential concerns;
Follow established policies and procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury;
Model good sportsmanship and maintain appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators;

Maintain equipment and ensure its secure storage;
Participate in activities, and perform support tasks, as directed by the Head Coach

Physical Requirements

communications; use of sports equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the
telephone, visual ability to read.
Working Environment
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment and employee may be exposed to dust, odors, oil,
fumes, and more. Extensive contact with staff, parents, and students. Frequent interruptions.  Office, field, and
school campus environment. May handle cash transactions.
