Job Summary
The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is seeking a Research Assistant who will work with the chief curator and the curator of modern and contemporary collections to facilitate research in the GRI's audio and video (AV) collections and to assist with programming around the AV collections. A centerpiece of programming will be an interdisciplinary workshop that convenes scholars, academics, and curators to assess the status of discovery and activation in GRI collections and in those of fellow institutions. The ideal candidate will be a graduate student or post-graduate with experience in Art History, Music, and Information Studies and an ability to organize, prioritize, and prepare lists of hundreds of recordings for digitization. The AV materials to be addressed will comprise experimental music, performance art, dance, sound art, and video art. This is a 2-year limited-term position working 10 hours/week.
Major Job Responsibilities
  • Evaluates collection inventories and finding aids of AV materials
  • Prepares a LibraryGuide for researchers consisting of summaries of GRI AV holdings, illustrations of collections, captions and descriptive texts, bibliographies, and related resources
  • Requests images for LibGuide; researches and obtains art and image permissions
  • Gathers, processes, and presents institutional data on current practices and programs in peer academic institutions, as well as galleries, libraries, archives, and museums
  • Proofreads and edits descriptive texts
  • May copyedit and review texts for public dissemination or publication
  • Assists with the creation of reports, project websites, and PowerPoint presentations

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in art history or music with some expertise in information science
  • 0-2 years research experience
  • Excellent communication skills including writing and oral presentations
