Job description

Job Summary

Trial Attorney (Tax) – Permanent position in the National Fraud Enforcement Division’s Tax Section, Department of Justice, located in Washington, DC.

Duties
  • Collaborate with unit managers to conduct investigations and prosecutions, advise on strategy, and develop litigation priorities.
  • Recommend charging decisions and propose dispositions for assigned cases.
  • Partner with Assistant U.S. Attorneys and other federal law‑enforcement attorneys on the development, management, and trial of tax and related financial fraud cases.
  • Engage in all phases of investigation and litigation, including use of the grand jury, advising agents, utilizing international evidence‑collection tools, preparing pleadings, and litigating motions and trials before U.S. District Courts across the country.
  • Advise and instruct Assistant U.S. Attorneys on complex legal questions and departmental policy concerning internal revenue laws.
  • Consult with the Assistant Attorney General, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Section Chief, and other Section Managers on case status and criminal remedies.
Required Qualifications
  • J.D. degree (or equivalent) and active license to practice law in any U.S. State, territory, or District of Columbia; bar member in good standing.
  • At least 2½ years post‑J.D. legal experience for GS‑14 (with one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS‑13). Specialized experience must include legal analysis, pleadings, briefs, and litigation in civil or criminal matters.
  • For GS‑15, at least 4 years post‑J.D. legal experience (with one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS‑14), including independent legal analysis, complex litigation, and staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience as a federal criminal prosecutor, in supporting or supervising criminal cases, and familiarity with U.S. District Court procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience litigating before federal or state courts, including in the U.S. District Court.
  • Experience with the federal judiciary and knowledge of internal revenue law.

Applicants must commit to a three‑year service period in the Fraud Division upon acceptance.
