Description
Hampton University Athletics is seeking a highly motivated and knowledgeable professional to serve as the Director of Sports Performance. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive strength and conditioning programs designed to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury risk, and support the overall health and wellness of student-athletes.
The Director of Sports Performance will work collaboratively with coaches, athletic trainers, sports medicine staff, and administration to ensure that all programs align with the mission and goals of Hampton University Athletics.
Examples of Duties
  • Design and implement sport-specific strength and conditioning programs for assigned teams.
  • Develop year-round training plans focused on performance enhancement, injury prevention, flexibility, mobility, speed, agility, and recovery.
  • Supervise and monitor all weight room and conditioning activities to ensure proper technique and safety protocols are followed.
  • Collaborate with coaches and sports medicine staff regarding student-athlete performance, rehabilitation, and return-to-play plans.
  • Maintain accurate records related to student-athlete progress and performance metrics.
  • Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the strength and conditioning facility and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and Hampton University rules and regulations.
  • Assist in fostering a culture of discipline, accountability, teamwork, and student-athlete development.
  • Supervise graduate assistants, interns, and student workers assigned to sports performance operations.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, professional development opportunities, and other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Performance, or a related field.
  • Previous collegiate strength and conditioning experience preferred.
  • Certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA-CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) required.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as necessary.

Supplemental Information
Work Environment
  • Early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday hours required in alignment with football training, competition, winter/spring ball, and summer programs.
  • Position requires the ability to lift, spot, and demonstrate strength and conditioning movements, stand for extended periods, and travel with the football team as assigned.
  • Full-time, on-campus position in Hampton, Virginia, subject to Hampton University employment policies and applicable athletic governance standards.
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced collegiate athletics environment, including evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
