Job description

SENIOR ENGINEERING DESIGNER- WATER & WASTEWATER

Why This Role Matters

As a Senior Engineering Designer – Water & Wastewater, you will play a key role in planning, designing, and delivering infrastructure projects that protect public health and improve the quality of life in communities throughout the region. Working primarily with municipal clients, you will collaborate with licensed Professional Engineers, Project Managers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative, practical, and sustainable engineering solutions.

In this role, you will contribute to projects from planning and preliminary design through construction, preparing high-quality engineering documents for water treatment plants (WTPs), wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs), water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, pump stations, force mains, stormwater management systems, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs). You'll also work closely with our electrical, mechanical, structural, environmental, and architectural professionals to deliver fully coordinated engineering solutions.

This position is ideal for a motivated Engineering Designer who enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges, working independently on diverse projects, and continuing to grow professionally while making a lasting impact on the communities we serve.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare engineering design models, plans, specifications, and construction documents using Civil 3D for municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Design and develop plans for water treatment plants (WTPs), wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs), water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, pump stations, force mains, stormwater management systems, and related municipal infrastructure.
  • Develop engineering reports, conceptual layouts, engineering exhibits, report graphics, quantity takeoffs, and engineer's opinions of probable construction cost.
  • Apply applicable engineering principles, design standards, and regulatory requirements to produce practical and code-compliant designs.
  • Coordinate design efforts with electrical, mechanical, structural, environmental, and other engineering disciplines to develop complete and coordinated construction documents.
  • Follow Corporate Civil CAD Standards while producing accurate, consistent, and high-quality engineering drawings.
  • Perform field investigations and site visits to verify existing conditions and support project development.
  • Assist with construction administration activities, including reviewing contractor submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), evaluating shop drawings, and observing construction progress.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, municipalities, regulatory agencies, utility owners, and contractors throughout project planning, design, and construction.
  • Review project deliverables for quality, completeness, and compliance with company standards and project requirements.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and engineering staff as appropriate.
  • Continue developing technical knowledge and design expertise through training, professional development, and collaboration with senior staff.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in municipal civil engineering design, with experience in water and wastewater infrastructure preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including grading, alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, and plan production.
  • Working knowledge of HydroCAD, SewerGEMS, WaterGEMS, or comparable hydraulic and hydraulic modeling software.
  • Experience preparing construction plans, specifications, technical reports, and engineering calculations.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, analyze technical data, and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong understanding of municipal infrastructure design principles, applicable codes, and industry standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project schedules.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to project sites and client meetings (mileage reimbursable).

Why You'll Enjoy Working Here

  • Design projects that directly improve communities and protect public health.
  • Work on a diverse portfolio of municipal water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects.
  • Collaborate with experienced professionals across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and architectural disciplines.
