Job description

Assistant Professor of Film and Media Arts

Apply now Job no: 50000561
Work type: Full time
Location: Virginia Beach
Categories: School of Communications & the Arts

Regent University's School of Communication and the Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Film and Media Arts. This faculty member will teach across the film curriculum, with a special focus on screenwriting and fiction film production.

The successful candidate will hold an MFA in film production or a closely related filmmaking discipline by the start date and maintain an active and ongoing creative practice. That practice must show an established or emerging record of creative scholarship peer-reviewed through festivals and other juried or curated forums. Candidates must have strengths in fiction filmmaking, including screenwriting, as well as a craft specialization in one or more of the following: sound design, producing, or post-production.

We are especially interested in candidates conversant in one or more contemporary areas of practice: writing for episodic and streaming platforms and the contemporary writers' room; independent and micro-budget feature development; and the craft implications of generative AI and virtual production for how stories are written and made. We welcome strong artists working in any active area of the field.

Regent University is one of the nation's leading academic centers for Christian thought and action, offering over 150 associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees and enrolling more than 13,000 students worldwide. Regent offers high-quality, in-demand, and affordable degree programs while remaining committed to its foundational mission to educate Christian leaders to change the world.

The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000 annually. Rank and salary within the range are commensurate with academic experience, a record of creative work adjudicated in juried, curated, or professionally selective forums, and demonstrated capacity to teach and serve across the curriculum.

Work Location: Virginia Beach, VA

Expectations include 1) a dedication to Christ-centered teaching and learning; 2) an active and ongoing program of creative practice in the discipline; 3) the ability to teach graduate and undergraduate-level courses; 4) facility with online instructional technology and demonstrated success teaching in both online and residential formats; and 5) a willingness to embrace the School and University Identity and Mission statements and subscribe to a statement of Christian faith.

Appointment will begin July 1, 2027. To apply, complete the faculty application and submit a current CV, a cover letter, and a portfolio of creative work. The portfolio must provide links to complete works rather than reels or excerpts, and must state for each work your specific creative role and contribution together with the work's festival, exhibition, or distribution history and dates. The cover letter should describe: your current creative practice and the direction of your work over the next several years; your preparation to teach screenwriting at every level alongside your craft specialization; your teaching philosophy, including professional mentoring and experience directing capstone and thesis projects; and the relationship between your Christian faith and your scholarly and teaching vocation.

Official transcripts will be required at the time of employment. Review of applications will begin October 1 and continue until the position is filled. Applications that do not include all of the materials listed above will not be reviewed.

Regent University does not discriminate in employment in its programs or activities on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, disability, age or veteran status. For full Non-Discrimination Policy click here.
