Description
Vacancy is in the Animal Control Division of the Hartford Police Department. Under general supervision of the Chief of Police performs moderately difficult work in impounding and caring for unlicensed, roaming, injured, mistreated, diseased, vicious or dangerous dogs or other animals. Maintains records of all activities, complaints, arrests and daily functions including redemption and sale of dogs and receipts. Transports impounded animals to the pound or Humane Society. Responsible for the proper care and control over the pound and the impounded dogs. Prepares quarantine notices and forwards them to the State and owners of diseased dogs. Answers all complaints and enforces the State Statutes and City Ordinances regarding animals. Conducts surveys of dogs in the city; prepares reports of unlicensed dogs and forwards them to the Town Clerk's Office; notifies owners of unlicensed dogs of license requirements. Tries to find homes for suitable unclaimed dogs. Transports animal remains to Health Department for autopsy. Investigates complaints of stolen dogs. This is a Hartford Police Union position. The hours of this position are 40 per week.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Humane procedure of animal collection, care and disposal.
  • State Statutes, City Ordinances and all other regulations regarding animals.
  • The geography of the City of Hartford.

Ability to:
  • Keep records and prepare reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.

Qualifications
Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:
Graduation from a standard high or vocational school and two (2) years experience in caring for animals including some experience in animal protection work.
If already a certified Animal Control Officer in the State of Connecticut, please attach a copy of your certification to your application for further consideration by the department.
A COPY OF YOUR DIPLOMA OR TRANSCRIPT MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION. A DIPLOMA OR TRANSCRIPT SUBMITTED WILL BE VERIFIED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.
If selected for the position, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening examination, and a background check. If appointed, you will be required to serve 3-12 months of probation. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations.
