GENERAL PURPOSE
The Technical Assistant is responsible for assisting the Manager of Support Services (MSS) with the day-to-day duties associated with the Hendricks County 911 (HC911) technical systems, such as radio programming, computer aided dispatch, and updating databases.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  1. Assists with equipment technical needs associated with the Hoosier SAFE-T Public Safety 800 MHz P25 trunked radio systems of Hendricks County
  2. Assists with the testing, updating, use of software, mobile and handheld radios associated with public safety (Fire/Law/EMS).
  3. Assists various departments using the Public Safety Radio System, such as law enforcement and fire departments and other County departments, including coordinating activities assigned to perform with those agencies.
  4. Consults with other HC911 staff, technical personnel of local governments, and has direct contact with vendors.
  5. Assists with maintaining computer databases of radio users and their appropriate radio identifiers by working with agencies to obtain current information and entering data into related systems.
  6. Assists HC911 Staff with inventory and maintenance coordination of HC911 assets.
  7. Maintains awareness of new trends and advances in the field; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  8. In coordination with the MSS, suggests radio system enhancements with a focus on improving officer and firefighter safety.
  9. Assists with maintaining the integrity of all encryption keys utilized in Hendricks County when programming keys into radios, keeping record of all activities involving encryption key programming.
  10. Assists with programming templates into radios, radio updates, and radio management software job processing as assigned.
  11. Assists with technical support to include but not limited to alignment of radios and radio troubleshooting.
  12. Assists with GIS and CAD programming as assigned.
  13. Respond to support requests via ticketing system as assigned.
  14. Attend meetings as assigned.
  15. Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: Must have attended or attend within 1 year of hiring a certified class for radio programming software, radio template and code plug creation for radios on the HC911 Radio System. Preferred to demonstrate radio knowledge by holding a valid FCC Amateur Technician License or higher. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Computer software skills required include: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Computer-Aided Dispatch.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural, linguistic backgrounds and disabilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions.
