Job Description

As an Overnight Assignment Editor on the Network News Desk, you will work alongside a shift-based team to oversee domestic newsgathering needs for the News Group. You will work to provide editorial and logistical support to all platforms across broadcast, digital, and streaming in the overnight hours and to prepare for morning shows.


Responsibilities:

  • Work to compile the Overnight editorial notes for mass distribution to the News Group
  • Alert overnight teams (mainly Today Show, Morning News NOW, Digital) about breaking news and developments for ongoing stories
  • Know when to wake up leadership when news requires moving resources / possible special reports, etc.
  • Coordinate the gathering and feeding of news materials
  • Effectively research & implement coverage of breaking news & on-going stories
  • Ability to jump in & quickly assess what is needed on coverage of a breaking story
  • Collaborate with NBC News digital, streaming and broadcast platforms on newsgathering, social media initiatives and content distribution
  • Communicate with important groups such as Legal, Standards, R&C to make sure appropriate editorial/usage guidance is obtained and disseminated to all platforms
  • Use data to inform and evolve newsgathering, storytelling and audience engagement
  • Initiate & maintain communication with affiliates & News Channel counterparts
  • Effective use & monitoring of social media sites & the web
  • Facilitate and manage live reporter requests from all platforms for field teams on assignment
  • Participate in daily network-wide conferences
  • Establish & maintain working story & contact files
  • Monitor competitive broadcasts and digital platforms
  • Ability to put together a story coverage plan & layout with oversight from management
  • Work closely with Network & NBC News Now teams to accommodate their on-air needs (breaking news, correspondent requests, etc.)
  • Coordinate with technical and operations staff on resource management

Qualifications
  • At least 2 years editorial production experience at a network, local,  cable or digital outlet
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Proficient on newsroom systems and all social media outlets
  • Solid working knowledge of TV production, affiliates & satellite operations
  • Strong news judgment & communication skills are essential
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment & prioritize assignments
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and overnights, under tight deadline pressure, occasionally with little or no warning
  • Must be a team player, collaboration is key
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge and interest in news & current events
