Asset Map information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Asset Manager, and why are they important?
How does an Asset Manager typically collaborate with other departments to optimize asset performance?
What are Asset Map professionals and what do they do?
What is the difference between Asset Map vs GIS Specialist?
| Aspect | Asset Map | GIS Specialist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically GIS or mapping certifications, relevant software skills | GIS certifications, degree in geography, GIS, or related fields |
| Work Environment | Fieldwork, community planning, nonprofit or government agencies | Office-based, technical roles in government, consulting, or environmental firms |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used by community organizations, urban planners, environmental agencies | Employed in GIS firms, government agencies, environmental consulting |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Understanding mapping tools for community or asset management | Technical GIS skills, spatial data analysis, mapping expertise |
Asset Map and GIS Specialist roles both involve geographic data, but Asset Map focuses on community assets and planning, often in nonprofit or local government settings. GIS Specialists have broader technical GIS expertise, working on spatial data analysis across various industries. While overlapping in mapping skills, their primary functions and work environments differ.

Job description
The Auditor / Field Specialist is responsible for the collection, mapping, maintenance, and quality control of geospatial data related to utility poles, underground fiber optic, conduit, and telecommunications infrastructure. Working directly in the field alongside construction and engineering crews, this role ensures that all assets are accurately documented in the company's GIS system in compliance with client standards and project specifications.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties are representative but not all-inclusive:
Field Data Collection & Mapping
- Collect GPS/GIS field data for utility poles, underground fiber optic cables, conduits, manholes, handholes, splice enclosures, and related telecom assets.
- Record and upload as-built documentation, photos, and locating data to the GIS system in real time or at end of shift.
- Interpret construction drawings, design plans, and as-built sketches to verify field placement of infrastructure.
- Perform utility locates and assist in marking underground assets for One-Call compliance.
- Walk job sites to verify asset placement against design documentation, flagging discrepancies for field engineers.
GIS Database Management
- Update and maintain GIS databases for underground fiber and telecom networks using ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Digitize fiber routes, duct runs, manhole/handhole locations, splice points, distribution cabinets, and access panels.
- Maintain accurate attribute data including cable type, fiber count, conduit size, asset IDs, and installation dates.
- Generate maps, KMZ/KML files, and field reports for planning, engineering, and operations teams
- Perform QA/QC on all collected field data prior to submission; reconcile discrepancies between field and design documentation.
Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate directly with construction crews, field engineers, and project managers to validate data accuracy.
- Communicate field conditions, mapping status, and data issues clearly and promptly to supervisory staff.
- Liaise with client representatives and utility owners as needed to support right-of-way and locating activities.
- Attend project site meetings and provide GIS progress updates as requested.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific safety requirements at all times.
- Wear appropriate PPE including high-visibility vest, hard hat, safety boots, and other required gear.
- Complete and submit Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) prior to beginning daily field activities.
- Comply with Dig Safe / 811 one-call requirements and utility locating regulations in applicable states.
- Report all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, Civil Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 1-3 years of GIS field experience in a telecom, utilities, or infrastructure setting preferred.
- Experience with ArcGIS, ArcGIS Field Maps, QGIS, or equivalent GIS platform required.
- Experience reading and interpreting fiber design drawings, utility as-builts, or construction plans.
- Prior experience with GPS data collection devices (e.g., Trimble, Juniper) is a strong plus.
- Underground utility locating experience preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online / Field Maps, or QGIS.
- Ability to operate GPS/GNSS field collection equipment and transfer data to GIS platforms.
- Familiarity with fiber management systems and telecom network inventory tools.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Knowledge of coordinate systems, spatial data formats (shapefile, GeoJSON, KMZ), and data projections.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD for interpreting engineering drawings is a plus.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
- OSHA 10 certification required (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- First Aid / CPR certification preferred.
- Flagger / Work Zone Safety certification preferred (state-specific requirements apply per project location).
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
This is a physically demanding, field-based position. Candidates must be able to:
