Job description

UPMC Hamot is seeking detail-oriented, experienced Central Sterile Processing candidates to join our team!

In this role, you will perform the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment in accordance with established procedures. UPMC Hamot's Central Sterile Processing team plays a vital role in supporting safe, high-quality surgical care and achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Eligible candidates may qualify for a $2,500 sign-on bonus. Certified Central Sterile Processing professionals may be eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Schedule: Full-time, 2nd shift (2:30 PM - 11:00 PM). Weekend and holiday rotations are required upon completion of training. Training may be completed on dayshift.

  • Prior Central Sterile processing experience is highly preferred.
  • Prior healthcare experience is highly preferred.
  • Individuals who enjoy hands-on work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Candidates who are comfortable being on their feet for extended periods and lifting up to 25 pounds.

The Central Processing Department (CPD) is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing the instrumentation and equipment used throughout our operating rooms and procedural areas. This is an active, team-oriented role that is essential to supporting surgical services and patient care.

Overview: To be trained to perform duties necessary for the proper decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • Additional Duties: Performs related duties as assigned. Adheres to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent with no experience -or- Currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Program Preferred -or-1 year of experience within UPMC
  • All staff must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician OR International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Managementrequired for our PA and NY facilities (MD facilities are excluded). New employees in our PA and NY facilities (MD is excluded) will have 18 months from date of hire to obtain required certification.
  • Act 34
  • Employees active in a Central Sterile position, on or before the effective date 12/27/2020, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification
