What is an ASNT NDT professional?

ASNT NDT professionals are individuals certified by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) to perform nondestructive testing (NDT) methods. NDT involves evaluating the properties of materials, components, or systems without causing damage. These professionals use techniques such as ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing to identify flaws or defects in structures and equipment. ASNT certification ensures that the individual has met industry standards for knowledge and competence in NDT procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ASNT NDT technician?

To thrive as an ASNT NDT Technician, you need a solid understanding of materials science, inspection methods, and relevant safety standards, typically backed by ASNT certification (such as Level I, II, or III) and a technical diploma or degree. Familiarity with NDT tools like ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing equipment is crucial, along with knowledge of reporting and data analysis software. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting results accurately and collaborating with engineering teams. These skills ensure the integrity and safety of structures or components, preventing failures and maintaining compliance with industry regulations.

What are some typical challenges faced by an assistant NDT technician, and how can they be managed?

Assistant NDT Technicians often encounter challenges such as adapting to new testing technologies, working in physically demanding environments, and ensuring strict adherence to safety and quality standards. Managing these challenges requires a strong attention to detail, willingness to continuously learn, and effective communication with senior technicians and engineers. Building experience through hands-on practice and staying updated with industry certifications can also help Assistant NDTs excel and progress in their careers.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day

The ASNT Level III NDT/NDT Manager

serves as the technical authority and program owner for nondestructive examination at a high‑integrity investment casting facility producing nickel‑based superalloy blade and vane castings. This role provides technical leadership, governance, and strategic oversight of the site NDT program, encompassing Visual Testing (VT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), and Radiographic Testing (RT) including Computer Radiography (CR) Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Tomography (CT). You will act as the technical authority for inspecting safety-critical hardware, focusing on enhancing inspection robustness, reducing defect escapes, and minimizing non-conformance costs. The role is structured around three core areas: NDI Technical Governance, which establishes and enforces inspection standards; Personnel Competency & Oversight, ensuring all NDI staff are qualified and certified; and Enterprise Harmonization & Improvement, which aligns practices across Siemens Energy and drives technological advancements. The ideal candidate must be an ASNT certified Level III NDI expert in Radiographic Testing (RT), Penetrant Testing (PT), Visual Inspection (VI), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT). They should have extensive experience in a high-consequence manufacturing environment and a deep understanding of ISO 9001 and ASNT/NAS 410 standards. Additionally, the candidate must possess the ability to lead and mentor a team of inspection professionals.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Serve as the primary technical authority for RT, PT, VT, UT, and advanced NDI methods, while developing and governing NDI procedures and acceptance criteria in compliance with the ISO 9001 management system.
  • Provide definitive technical dispositions for non-conforming materials and complex inspection interpretations to ensure product integrity and prevent defect escapes.
  • Lead the qualification and validation of new and existing NDI equipment, focusing on digital radiography systems and related inspection software.
  • Oversee the qualification, certification, and ongoing competency management of all NDI personnel in accordance with ASNT (SNT-TC-1A) and ANSI/NAS 410 / EN 4179 standards, while administering certification examinations and maintaining training records.
  • Provide technical mentorship and training to NDI inspectors to ensure consistent and accurate application of inspection techniques and standards.
  • Collaborate with NDE/NDT experts across Siemens Energy to harmonize NDI requirements and best practices, support new product introduction (NPI) projects with robust NDI strategies, and lead continuous improvement initiatives impacting product integrity and inspection capabilities.

What You Bring

  • Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) as a Level III NDI/NDE professional in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the aerospace or power generation industry.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Equivalent working experience in lieu of a degree

  • ASNT NDT Level III Certification in Radiographic Testing (RT), Penetrant Testing (PT), Visual Testing (VT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is required.

  • Demonstrated experience with investment casting processes and the inspection of high-value, safety-critical components, as well as proven experience managing personnel certification programs compliant with ASNT SNT-TC-1A and/or NAS 410.

  • Proficiency in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods and technologies, including Digital Radiography (DR), and a strong background in quality management systems, quality control, and continuous improvement processes.

  • Strong leadership and governance skills, including accountability, influencing abilities, and collaboration.

  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without the need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.

  • This position will require an export license from the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. Issuance of any required license is a prerequisite for this position. The candidate must be able to work with export-controlled technology in accordance with US export control law.
