What is an ASM software engineer?

An ASM Software Engineer is a software developer who specializes in programming using Assembly language (ASM). Assembly language is a low-level programming language that provides direct control over a computer's hardware, making it crucial for tasks requiring high performance, such as embedded systems, operating systems, and performance-critical applications. ASM Software Engineers are responsible for writing, optimizing, and debugging assembly code, often working closely with hardware or other low-level software components. Their expertise is valuable in industries where efficiency and speed are paramount.

What are some common challenges faced by ASM software engineers when optimizing low-level code?

ASM Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to debugging and optimizing low-level code, as small changes can have significant impacts on performance and hardware interactions. Working with Assembly language requires a deep understanding of computer architecture, memory management, and system constraints, making troubleshooting more complex than in higher-level languages. Collaboration with hardware engineers and other software developers is frequent, as aligning software functionality with hardware capabilities is crucial for achieving optimal performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ASM software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ASM Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in Assembly language programming, computer architecture, and low-level problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools like assemblers, debuggers, and version control systems, as well as experience with hardware-specific SDKs or embedded platforms, is often required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying bugs and collaborating on complex systems. These skills ensure efficient, reliable code development and successful integration within performance-critical or hardware-near applications.

Is 25 too late to become an Asm Software Engineer?

Becoming an Asm Software Engineer at age 25 is feasible, as many software engineering roles value skills and experience over age. Gaining proficiency in assembly language, understanding hardware architecture, and building a strong portfolio can help regardless of age, and many professionals transition into software engineering later in their careers.

Job description

Total Product Support Engineer - ALD | Phoenix, AZ
(ALD equipment experience required)

At ASM, our technology enables the world's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing-and our people are what make that possible. We're looking for a Total Product Support Engineer to join our ALD team in Phoenix, where you'll play a critical role in launching new products and ensuring they succeed in realworld fab environments.

This role puts you at the center of new product development, acting as the systemlevel expert who bridges engineering design, manufacturing readiness, and customer success. If you enjoy deep technical ownership, crossfunctional collaboration, and seeing your work directly impact customer fabs worldwide, this is a unique opportunity to make your mark.

What You'll Be Working On

As a Total Product Support Engineer, you'll own some of the most important phases of a product's lifecycle-from first build to first customer success:

  • Serve as the systemlevel expert for ALD product support during new product development
  • Partner closely with Hardware, Electrical, Controls, Process, and Software engineering teams to develop deep system knowledge
  • Influence product design by providing customerfocused input on preventive maintenance, serviceability, and design for manufacturability
  • Own the first build and test of new products in the development lab, identifying issues early and recommending practical solutions in real time
  • Develop and document bestknown methods and procedures for service, preventive, and corrective maintenance
  • Lead FirstinFab (Alpha and Beta) deployments, driving customer fab readiness, installation, startup, and production qualification
  • Act as the primary owner for customer issues during Alpha and Beta phases, ensuring strong communication and rapid resolution
  • Provide detailed reporting and feedback on field issues to strengthen product robustness and reliability
  • Define critical spare parts strategies, ensuring readiness and smooth execution for new product shipments

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and 5+ years of handson experience with semiconductor equipment
  • Direct experience with ALD equipment (required)
  • Strong systemlevel troubleshooting skills and the ability to work across disciplines
  • Willingness to travel 25-50%, depending on the product development cycle
  • Comfort working in both lab and customer fab environments

Why ASM?

At ASM, you won't just support products-you'll help shape how they're built, launched, and adopted worldwide. You'll work alongside top engineering talent, gain deep exposure to new product development, and have direct influence on tools used by leading semiconductor manufacturers across the globe.

This is a role with real ownership, high visibility, and meaningful technical impact-ideal for engineers who want to grow their expertise while contributing to industrydefining technology.
