What is an ASL internship?

An ASL internship is a structured work experience program focused on American Sign Language (ASL), typically designed for students or individuals training to become ASL interpreters or seeking hands-on experience in Deaf community services. Internships often take place in educational, medical, or community settings and allow participants to apply their language and interpreting skills in real-world situations under the guidance of experienced professionals. The internship provides valuable insights into Deaf culture, professional ethics, and practical interpreting techniques, helping prepare interns for certification and future employment.

What types of projects or assignments can I expect during an ASL internship?

During an ASL Internship, you can expect to work on a variety of assignments such as assisting certified interpreters, supporting classroom communication, participating in outreach events, and helping with administrative tasks related to Deaf services. Interns often have opportunities to observe and practice interpreting in real-world settings, collaborate with experienced professionals, and receive constructive feedback. This hands-on experience not only enhances your ASL skills but also helps you understand the professional standards and ethical considerations in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ASL intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ASL Intern, you need a solid understanding of American Sign Language, basic interpreting techniques, and familiarity with Deaf culture, often supported by coursework or entry-level certification in ASL. Experience with video relay services, interpreting software, and basic audio-visual equipment is beneficial. Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity, and a willingness to learn make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are critical for building strong connections with the Deaf community and effectively supporting professional interpreters during assignments.
