Graduate Student Instructor positions are only open to current or matriculating University of Michigan graduate students.
Responsibilities*
Lead three weekly discussion sections; grade homework, papers, and tests; attend lecture twice weekly; create and implement teaching plans in consultation with the lead instructor; attend meetings with the other course GSIs and instructor; hold two office hours each week in the South Thayer Building.
Required Qualifications*
Students who have not previously been a GSI for the College of LSA will be required to complete the online CRLT GSI Teaching Orientation . New GSIs to the ALC Department will be required to attend ALC GSI Orientation, date TBA.
Previous coursework in Buddhism and/or familiarity with Asian religions. Students whose undergraduate degree is from an institution where the language of instruction is not English must have already taken or be currently enrolled in the English Language Institute?s ELI 994. The student must have a passing score of 4 on the Oral English Test (OET).
Desired Qualifications*
Undergraduate degree in Asian Studies, Philosophy, or Religion. Enrollment in a graduate program focused on Asian studies or religion. Previous experience in higher education instruction, preferably within the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures or a related discipline.
Course Description
Applicants to this posting will be considered for up to one 50% GSI teaching position in ASIAN 230: Introduction to Buddhism.
ASIAN 230: Introduction to Buddhism
Over the course of its long history, Buddhism has been the most influential and widely practiced religion in Asia. Beginning in India 2500 years ago, it eventually spread to China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, and Mongolia, and to Sri Lanka and throughout Southeast Asia. More recently it has spread to Europe, the Americas, and Australia. This course is an introduction to the major themes in Buddhist thought and practice. Beginning with the teachings associated with the historical Buddha, the course will go on to consider the development of the tradition over its long history in India. All readings for the course will be Buddhist texts in translation.
