Job description

SMS Shipbreaking, LLC is one of the few approved ship recyclers in the nation and also handles the dismantling and recycling of oil drilling rigs and oil production platforms. An industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/workers’ safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS in Brownsville, TX is seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused Asbestos Worker. 
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the removal of asbestos containing material on a marine vessel in accordance with specifications by your supervisor and all federal and state regulations (NESHAP & OSHA)
  • Ability to remove electrical cables, floor titles and asbestos containing material using hand, electric and/or pneumatics tools
  • Ability to break and remove concrete floors using hand, electric and/or pneumatics tools
  • Ability to wet down removed material, double bag and properly label each bag
  • Ability to prepare open and/or close 30’ 40’ cubic yard containers for properly disposing asbestos material
  • Ability to prepare areas on the marine vessel for abatement, set up and containment
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety requirements in a scrap yard environment, including use of proper PPE
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned

Physical Demands
Ability to walk more than 1000 yards; stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift and carry no more
than 50 lbs; climb stairs and/or ladders; stooping; crawling; reaching; handling; pushing; pulling; twisting;
kneeling; squatting; seeing; speaking; hearing.
Working Conditions
Aboard a Marine Vessel or dismantling yard. Required to work outside in all kinds of weather or in
buildings without heating or air conditioning. Some tasks are dangerous, including removing lead,
asbestos or chemicals.

Heat, rain, fire, burns, falls, noise, heights, air particles, inhalation, falling objects and splashes
