As400 Testing information

What is an AS400 Testing?

An AS400 Testing job involves evaluating applications running on the IBM AS400 (now IBM i) platform to ensure functionality, performance, and security. Testers work with RPG, COBOL, CL, and DB2-based applications, executing test cases, identifying bugs, and validating system outputs. They use manual and automated testing techniques, including unit testing, system testing, and regression testing. The role requires knowledge of AS400 commands, database structures, and business logic implementation.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges of AS400 Testing?

AS400 Testing professionals are responsible for designing and executing test cases, validating data integrity, and ensuring that business applications on the AS/400 platform run as intended. A common challenge in this role is working with complex legacy code and systems that may lack thorough documentation, which requires testers to be resourceful and detail-oriented. Testers also collaborate closely with developers, business analysts, and end-users to understand requirements, troubleshoot issues, and verify fixes. The work environment often involves both independent analysis and teamwork, and there's ample opportunity to develop expertise in legacy modernization projects or transition into test lead or quality assurance roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for AS400 Testing, and why are they important?

To thrive in AS400 Testing, you need a solid understanding of IBM AS/400 (iSeries) environments, RPG/COBOL programming languages, and knowledge of software testing methodologies. Familiarity with tools such as IBM Rational, Selenium, or other test automation frameworks, along with ISTQB certification, is often beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help testers collaborate effectively and report findings. These competencies ensure the delivery of robust, high-quality business applications on legacy systems, minimizing risks and defects.
