A common challenge in this role is working with complex legacy code and systems that may lack thorough documentation, which requires testers to be resourceful and detail-oriented. Testers also collaborate closely with developers, business analysts, and end-users to understand requirements, troubleshoot issues, and verify fixes. The work environment often involves both independent analysis and teamwork, and there's ample opportunity to develop expertise in legacy modernization projects or transition into test lead or quality assurance roles.

To thrive in AS400 Testing, you need a solid understanding of IBM AS/400 (iSeries) environments, RPG/COBOL programming languages, and knowledge of software testing methodologies. Familiarity with tools such as IBM Rational, Selenium, or other test automation frameworks, along with ISTQB certification, is often beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help testers collaborate effectively and report findings. These competencies ensure the delivery of robust, high-quality business applications on legacy systems, minimizing risks and defects.
