Job description

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)ย is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideasโ€”engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.ย 

BAM is seeking a Government Relations Coordinator! The ideal candidate will implement tactics to support government funding strategies, including proposal development, funding reports, application submissions, and other related activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and filing government grant proposals and reports to secure government funding and partnership
  • Handle all administrative duties for the department, including writing meeting minutes, delivering materials to elected officials and commissioners, and arranging tickets for performances, among other essential duties
  • Attend meetings with key government officials and their representatives to facilitate an understanding of BAM programs and audiences.
  • Invite key community stakeholders, elected officials, and government staffers to performances, cinema screenings, educational programs, and receptions to cultivate awareness and interest in BAMโ€™s mission
  • Attend and represent BAM at community and government events, like community board meetings, rallies, hearings, and other events
  • Assists with advocacy efforts for routine government and community support for BAM initiatives and ventures as well as city-wide arts and culture funding
  • Update and manage government contact details, plans, and gifts in Tessitura
  • Compile education and community program data
  • Develop documents with focused research and data relevant to government and community leaders
  • Process government funding through various city, state and federal portals and record this data in Tessitura
  • Develop internal and external documents that detail BAM programs and services, like newsletters, cultural district maps, budget hearing testimony, and other materials
  • Assist with the management and coordination of advancement projects as needed
  • Staff BAMโ€™s patron table on select evenings and support select special events like the annual MLK Breakfast and fundraising events
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required
  • 1-2 years of administrative experience working in an office environment
  • Strong interest in government and civic issues
  • Excellent verbal, written and communications skills

  • Experience with Tessitura or database applications
  • Reliable and self-motivated

Compensation: The salary for this position is $60,000. This role is represented by Local 2110 and will be paid in accordance with the BAM/UAW Local 2110 Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is full-time, non-exempt, and eligible for benefits. BAM provides a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plan opportunities including both 401(k) and pension plans, as well as BAM-related benefits including access to BAM's fantastic programming. ย 

Working conditions: Category 2: Administrative Work with Mobility

  • The employee is required to sit most of the time yet must move about on foot to accomplish some tasks, including frequently moving from one location to another.ย 
  • Environment: The employee is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
  • Location: On-site at BAM 3+ days a week, with occasional hybrid days consistent with the workload and the departmentโ€™s needs.
