Level: Journeyman | Work Location: Hybrid - McLean, VA

ABOUT THE ROLE
Red Carrot is seeking Technical Writer-Editors to research, draft, and edit a wide range of materials for the customer's research and technology program, including magazine features, technical reports, and system documentation. This role bridges technical subject matter experts and diverse audiences.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research and write original content for magazines, newsletters, user manuals, and research documents
  • Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and technical staff to translate complex concepts into clear narratives
  • Provide substantive editing across all production stages, correcting grammar, spelling, and format errors
  • Verify technical accuracy through interviews, conference attendance, and review of source materials
  • Ensure compliance with the GPO Style Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, and Section 508 accessibility standards
  • Manage copyright and permissions clearances for referenced or embedded material
  • Independently manage the full lifecycle of a document or article through multiple review cycles to final publication
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Journalism, or a related technical field
  • 5-10 years of professional experience in technical writing, editing, and publishing
  • Demonstrated expertise applying the GPO Style Manual and Chicago Manual of Style, and ensuring Section 508 compliance
  • Transportation sector experience, especially highway and surface transportation research, preferred
  • Ability to obtain a USDOT Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential
