What is art teaching?

Art teaching is the practice of educating students about different forms of visual art, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and design. Art teachers help students develop their creative skills, understand art history, and express themselves through various mediums. They work in schools, community centers, or private studios, adapting their lessons to different ages and skill levels. The goal of art teaching is to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the arts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an art teacher?

To excel as an Art Teacher, you typically need a strong background in art education, a bachelor's degree in art or art education, and state teaching certification. Familiarity with various art mediums, digital art tools, and classroom management software is essential. Creativity, patience, and effective communication distinguish outstanding art teachers by fostering a supportive and inspiring learning environment. These skills are crucial for engaging students, developing their artistic abilities, and managing a productive classroom.

How does an art teacher typically collaborate with colleagues and support staff within a school setting?

Art teachers often work closely with other educators, such as classroom teachers and special education staff, to integrate art projects with broader curriculum themes and adapt lessons for diverse student needs. Collaboration may include co-planning interdisciplinary units, participating in schoolwide events, and communicating with administrators about resource requirements. Building relationships with support staff like teaching assistants is also essential for managing classroom activities and ensuring a positive learning environment. This teamwork helps enhance the educational experience for students and fosters a supportive professional community.

Job description

Children's Art Classes is thrilled to announce its expansion into the Beverly, MA area! We are currently inviting applications from passionate individuals to join our team as Art Instructors. We are seeking a certified art teacher with teaching experience.
Children's Art Classes' instructors work in a school environment, and the ages of students taught can vary from pre-school up to young adults. We require our teachers to have a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), optimally having knowledge of art history and techniques. Ideally, the teacher will have a portfolio that may need to be shown to demonstrate personal ability, and evidence of teacher credentials.
Instructors should be capable of teaching a group of up to12 students at a time, while maintaining classroom management up to Children’s Art Classes standards. Some classes will only consist of about 6 students. It's also important to be able to control and effectively instruct a larger group during parties or events.
Strong verbal communication skills are essential in this position, and patience and adaptability to change are also important when lessons do not go as planned. The curriculum is already prepared! Art instructors are responsible for preparing the necessary materials to teach the class, so they must also keep a close eye on inventory levels.
This position offers 10-20 hours of work per week. Additionally, we provide all necessary supplies and a comprehensive curriculum. Continuous professional development is a part of our commitment, with ongoing required monthly training.
The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Strong and effective communication abilities
- Proficiency in implementing a structured curriculum
- Profound classroom management skills
- Bachelor of Fine Arts or Art Education degree.
Paid hourly teaching rate of $26.50 - $31
Birthday Parties or Special Events pay rate of $55.50
Training will begin in September. You will begin teaching classes the first week of October.

Company Description

Art class quickly becomes more than just a lesson — it becomes a safe emotional outlet, a place to unwind, recharge, and simply be themselves. It’s something they’ll genuinely look forward to every week, and a space where they can grow not just as an artist, but as a person.

Tapping into a child’s natural creativity and imagination can give them various benefits that can help them throughout their lives. We’re helping parents find kids’ art classes that instill a sense of creativity in their children and help them find a passion for art. These classes explore various types of art to enrich children’s lives and introduce them to creative outlets they can turn to as they go through life.
