What is art engineering?

Art engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of art and design with engineering and technology. Professionals in this area use their creative and technical skills to develop innovative solutions, such as interactive installations, digital media, and immersive experiences. Art engineers often work on projects that require both aesthetic sensitivity and technical expertise, bridging the gap between artists and engineers. Their work can be found in museums, public spaces, entertainment, and technology-driven art projects.

How do art engineers typically collaborate with artists and developers during the production process?

Art Engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between creative vision and technical implementation. They often work closely with artists to ensure that assets are optimized for performance without sacrificing visual quality, and with developers to integrate these assets into game engines or other platforms. Effective communication and problem-solving are key, as Art Engineers may need to troubleshoot issues, suggest workflow improvements, and provide technical guidance throughout production. Regular meetings and collaborative tools help facilitate this teamwork, fostering a dynamic, multidisciplinary work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an art engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Art Engineer, you need a solid foundation in both visual arts and technical disciplines such as computer science or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with 3D modeling software (like Maya or Blender), programming languages (such as C++ or Python), and real-time engines (like Unity or Unreal Engine) is typically required. Creative problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are critical soft skills for integrating artistic vision with technical implementation. These combined skills ensure that innovative, high-quality visual experiences are delivered efficiently within interdisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Art Engineering vs Graphic Design?

AspectArt EngineeringGraphic Design
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Art, Engineering, or related fields; technical skillsBachelor's in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or related fields
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, manufacturing, digital platformsAdvertising agencies, print and digital media
Industry UsageProduct development, multimedia, digital artsBranding, marketing, advertising

Art Engineering and Graphic Design share overlapping skills in visual creativity and technical knowledge. However, Art Engineering focuses on integrating engineering principles with artistic design, often involving technical tools and product development. Graphic Design emphasizes visual communication, branding, and marketing materials. Both roles are vital in creative industries but serve different purposes and require distinct skill sets.

What does an art engineer do?

An art engineer combines artistic skills with engineering knowledge to develop and maintain digital or physical art projects, such as interactive installations, visual effects, or multimedia displays. They often work with software tools like CAD or 3D modeling programs and collaborate with artists, designers, and engineers to ensure creative concepts are technically feasible and functional.

What jobs combine art and engineering?

Art engineering jobs include roles such as digital artist, multimedia developer, and interactive installation designer, which combine artistic creativity with technical skills like programming, 3D modeling, and electronics. These roles often require knowledge of software tools like CAD, Adobe Creative Suite, or Unity, and may involve working in environments such as studios, labs, or on-site installations.

About the Role

The Prepress Engineering Project Specialist is a key role within the Prepress Engineering team, supporting the creation and delivery of trading card products across Fanatics Collectibles' expanding portfolio of licensed brands. This role combines technical understanding of prepress and engineering workflows with strong scheduling, coordination, and administrative support.

Acting as the central point of communication, the Project Specialist connects Art, Prepress Engineering, Project Management, Mastering, and Project Coordinator teams to ensure card projects move smoothly from concept through final, print-ready delivery.

  • Coordinate schedules, priorities, and handoffs between Art, Engineering, Project Management, and Mastering (Prepress) teams
  • Support engineers by managing project tracking, timelines, and administrative tasks
  • Maintain clear, accurate project documentation including schedules, status updates, and change tracking
  • Communicate project requirements, updates, and issues across cross-functional partners
  • Assist with intake and organization of new card projects, including expanding licensed products
  • Help ensure engineering and prepress requirements are clearly understood and met before files move to mastering
  • Identify gaps, risks, or blockers and escalate appropriately
  • Support continuous improvement of workflows, tools, and documentation within PPE

What You Bring

  • Working knowledge of engineering, prepress, print production, or technical graphics workflows
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Comfort handling administrative and coordination tasks that keep teams moving efficiently
  • Clear, professional communication skills - written and verbal
  • Ability to work across creative and technical teams and translate needs between them
  • High attention to detail and follow-through

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting trading card, print, packaging, or similar production environments
  • Familiarity with prepress engineering, mastering, or print specifications
  • Experience working in licensed or compliance-driven product environments
  • Exposure to project management tools or production tracking systems

Role Scope & Intent (Internal Alignment)

  • Individual contributor role
  • Not a people manager
  • Owns coordination, communication, and project support rather than strategic project ownership
  • Acts as the connective tissue across Art, Engineering, PM, Mastering, and PCs
