Job Title: Peer Recovery Specialist (Case Manager)
Home Office: Anna, IL
Area of Focus: Behavioral Health
Program(s): Supplies, Access, Facilitation, and Education program (SAFE) is a harm reduction initiative operating under the Substance Use program (SUPR) and within the broader Behavioral Health framework. It is designed to support vulnerable individuals in the service area by reducing the negative consequences of substance use through trauma-informed, person-centered, and culturally responsive outreach. Substance Use Prevention & Recovery (SUPR) provides those impacted by substance misuse and their families with intervention, recovery support, and treatment services that focus on the unique needs of the individual and the community.
Immediate Supervisor: SUPR Program Coordinator

Hours of Work: Full-time, 40 hours/week. Peer crisis rotation required.

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt
Peer Recovery Specialist Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent; must obtain a CRSS certificate within 18 months of hire. Preference given to applicants who live within the community they will serve and collaborate with. Lived experience in areas of substance use is required.
Peer Recovery Specialist Skills & Knowledge: Knowledge of case management processes, regional resource/service systems, community engagement, word processing, and basic computer skills are required. Excellent written and oral communication is required, teaching basic life skills and problem solving strategies.
Peer Recovery Specialist Special Requirements: Must be willing to self-identify as a current or former recipient of substance use or co-occurring services; travels to off-site/community-based locations for direct service delivery; travel to all agency sites when appropriate; participates in after-hours crisis response rotation; ability to schedule evening appointments; maintains and provides proof of a valid driver's license; maintains and provides proof of personal vehicle liability insurance; at least 21 years of age to drive agency vehicles; must complete and maintain the required registry clearance and criminal finger print background checks; maintain first aid and CPR certification.
Peer Recovery Specialist job duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Models personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and hope by sharing personal recovery experiences and developing authentic peer-to-peer relationships within the parameters of professional boundaries.
  • Assists in the orientation process for persons who are new to receiving SUD and/or co-occurring disorders services; fills the support gap between initial contact and enrollment into services as needed.
  • Assist consumers in overcoming any barriers to meeting recovery goals through the provision of general support, case management services, assertive outreach, and teaching of lifeยญ management, self-advocacy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Engages and assist in the development of the individual treatment plan collaboratively with consumers and providers by defining recovery and health management goals, specific outcomes and time-frames.
  • Work with consumers one-on-one and in groups to provide recovery training, outreach, and support to individuals who are struggling with SUD and/or in the process of achieving or attempting to maintain their recovery from SUD.
  • Arrange for or directly provide transportation to recovery and wellness services appointments.
  • Keeps the treatment team informed about consumer's strengths, accomplishments, and obstacles in relation to their recovery goals.
  • Continuously expand knowledge of community resources, services and programs available to individuals served and build ongoing relationships with these organizations in order to advocate individuals with or in recovery from SUD.
  • Follows agency policy and procedure for all reports of abuse and neglect or suspected abuse and neglect.
  • Follows agency crisis intervention protocol to refer individuals to crisis intervention services/staff when someone presents in mental health crisis.
  • Responsible for assisting in the distribution of Naloxone, safer smoking kits, and other supplies along with providing overdose prevention training to clients and community members monthly in accordance with SAFE grant deliverables.
  • Ensures program readiness for implementation of Safer Use services, including outreach and community engagement activities.
  • Collaborate with internal program staff and external contractors to plan and provide direct Safer Use services targeting individuals at high risk of overdose.
  • Co-facilitate culturally responsive community trainings on harm reduction, overdose, prevention, and safer drug use as scheduled throughout the grant period.
  • Work alongside community partners such as Prevention First to coordinate Safer Transitions to Care and integrated referral pathways.
