Position Summary

The Ice Rink Operations Manager oversees the day-to-day operational management of the Boss Ice Arena during both event and non-event operations. This position is responsible for directing facility operations, supervising and developing part-time operations staff, and ensuring the arena is maintained in a safe, efficient, and high-quality operating condition. The Ice Rink Operations Manager assists the Director of Ice Rink with operational planning, project coordination, budgeting support, and implementation of facility initiatives related to ice maintenance, building systems, and overall venue operations. In addition, the Ice Rink Operations Manager exercises independent judgment in coordinating operational priorities, managing event readiness, and ensuring compliance with facility and safety standards. The Ice Rink Operations Manager also collaborates with the Operations Department at the Ryan Center to support arena operations and oversee event changeovers and related operational activities.

This role pays an annual salary of $53,000 to $58,000.

About the Venue

The state-of-the-art facility, the Bradford R. Boss Ice Arena, located on the University of Rhode Island campus in scenic South County, was built in 2002. Home to nationally ranked URI Men's and Women's Club Hockey programs, as well as the Southern Rhode Island Youth Hockey Association (the largest youth hockey program in Rhode Island), five Rhode Island High School Hockey programs, the URI Intramural Hockey League, daily public sessions, various youth and adult hockey leagues, and a year-round Learn to Skate program. Additionally, during the summer, Boss Ice Arena hosts a variety of hockey camps and clinics. With a seating capacity of 2,500, Boss Ice Arena includes two University team locker rooms, four large public locker rooms, one female auxiliary locker room, and an official's locker room.  The arena also features a university team weight room, a new concession stand, and a hospitality room, available for birthday parties, meetings, classes, and corporate events.

Responsibilities
  • Direct and oversee all day-to-day operational functions of the ice arena to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality facility operations.
  • Manage and supervise part-time operations staff, including hiring, scheduling, performance management, training, and corrective action.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate operational policies, procedures, and training programs related to ice maintenance, facility operations, and event support services.
  • Oversee execution of ice rink operational projects, preventative maintenance programs, and facility improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities for facility systems and equipment, including prioritization of repairs, vendor coordination, and operational continuity planning.
  • Prepare and manage operational schedules, staffing plans, project timelines, and facility usage coordination.
  • Participate in development and administration of departmental operating budgets; monitor expenditures and recommend capital improvements and operational investments.
  • Analyze operational needs and prepare reports, evaluations, and recommendations for facility enhancements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and university safety regulations, environmental standards, and hazardous materials procedures.
  • Serve as Manager-on-Duty with responsibility for operational decision-making, customer service resolution, staff oversight, and facility management during events and public programming.
  • Coordinate operational support activities with the Ryan Center as needed for successful execution of events and venue operations.
  • Establish performance expectations and operational standards to maintain a safe, professional, and customer-focused environment.
  • Operate and safely use facility equipment, including Zamboni and forklift, in support of daily arena operations and event setup/breakdown.
  • Utilize company vehicle as needed to support facility and event operations, including transportation of barricades, signage, snow plowing, and operational materials across campus locations.
Qualifications
  • 3-5+ years of experience with building maintenance operations and/or ice making and equipment operations and ice resurfacer maintenance.
  • CIT and/or STAR operator preferred; college degree is preferred but not required.
  • Capable of working a flexible schedule and extended hours, including but not limited to working early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to traditional business hours.
  • Must have the ability to lift heavy objects unaided.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and supervisory and organizational skills to function in a multi-task environment.
  • Familiarity with OSHA requirements.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and vehicle.
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel.
